Web Conferencing Systems and Services Web conferencing uses Internet access to facilitate interactive meetings or conferences right from the desktop. Web conferencing (also known as Web or online meetings) basically evolved from teleconferences, now called audio conferences, which enabled two or more groups of people to meet via phone lines, with call management features and speakerphones. Hosted services support real-time video of presentations and audio conferencing through a conventional Web browser. Some systems and services are more sophisticated than others, providing superior imaging, streaming video, and end user controls rather than just an interactive slide presentation. Although some Web conferencing systems and services use VoIP, some require having a separate voice phone line for audio conferencing. The audio part of the conference works independently of the Web communication and functions like a teleconference call. The Web conference uses the Internet to support interactive collaboration, such as posting presentations, sharing documents, and polling participants, and uses core collaboration tools that respond to a Web browser. This distinguishes from "open captions" (sometimes called "burned-in" or "hardcoded" captions), which are visible to all viewers. Most of the world does not distinguish captions from subtitles. In the US and Canada, these terms do have different meanings, however: "subtitles" assume the viewer can hear but cannot understand the language or accent, or the speech is not entirely clear, so they only transcribe dialogue and some on-screen text. "Captions" aim to describe to the deaf and hard of hearing all significant audio content—spoken dialogue and non-speech information such as the identity of speakers and, occasionally, their manner of speaking—along with music or sound effect using words or symbols. The UK and Ireland, and most other countries do not distinguish between subtitles and closed captions, and use "subtitles" as the general term—the equivalent of "captioning" is usually referred to as "Subtitles for the hard of hearing". Their presence is referenced on screen by notation which says "Subtitles", or previously "Subtitles 888" or just "888" (the latter two are in reference to the conventional teletext channel for captions).
