2. INTRODUCTION
(NAG MONI - SEP, 1994)
The perinatal period, comprising pregnancy and the
postpartum phase, represents a transformative and critical
stage in a woman's life, as well as a crucial period for fetal
development and early infancy. During this time, dietary
habits play a pivotal role in influencing the health and well-
being of both the expectant mother and the developing child.
While global health initiatives emphasize the importance of
optimal nutrition during the perinatal period, the impact of
cultural beliefs on the dietary habits of women in urban
communities remains a relatively underexplored area.
3. NEED OF THE STUDY
Pregnancy and the postpartum phase are universally
acknowledged as pivotal periods demanding heightened
attention to maternal nutrition. The significance of these
stages extends beyond the individual, influencing the health
and well-being of the newborn. However, within the mosaic
of cultural diversity that characterizes urban communities,
the dietary choices of women during the perinatal period
are not solely dictated by universal health guidelines; they
are deeply entwined with cultural beliefs, practices, and
traditions unique to each community.
