Diane Arbus was an American photographer known for her portraits of marginalized groups. She was born into a wealthy family but felt alienated as a child. Arbus began a successful fashion photography career but became interested in photographing "freaks, transvestites and nudists." Her black and white square format photos have a dark and unflinching style. While some saw her work as voyeuristic, Arbus was fascinated with exploring identity and society's outsiders. Her later work photographing mentally disabled subjects left her feeling drained, and she questioned if her work still mattered to her.
