DIAMONDS_Final

Editor's Notes

  1. 100-250m depth Archean crust, where it’s older, cooler and has a low geothermal gradient Kimberlites expanded and cooled quickly, this allows for high quality diamonds with little or no degradation and decreased likelihood of reverting back to graphite In general, the shallower the kimberlite the faster it was able to cool, means better quality diamonds Inequigranular texture, with xenoliths, xenocrysts, macrocrysts, microcrysts in fine-grained matrix, looks brecciated Kimberlites are younger than the diamonds they carry to the surface - melts pick up diamonds enroute to surface Diamond stability field
  2. Lamproites, related to kimberlites, ultrapotassic, slightly different mineral composition Contains minerals that are indicative of high pressures and temperatures Diamond stability zone Dominated by a forsteritic olivine and carbonate matrix with clasts of pyrope-garnet, chrome diopside, and ilmenites
  3. - highly variable value, based on the 4 C’s: carat, colour, clarity, and cut - used in jewellery - high lustre and dispersion of light (lots of ‘fire’) - resistance to scratching makes it suitable for daily wear Images: cut diamond, chart with values? Industrial Grade - make up the remainder of the diamonds not used for gemstones - are too badly flawed, irregularly shaped, poorly coloured, or too small - worth far less than gem grade diamonds, they are used only for their physical properties, not their appearance - cutting, grinding, polishing, drilling - hardest natural substance, high thermal conductivity Images: Ind. diamond, tools?
  4. Diamondiferous kimberlites are found in stabilized Archean cratons (Clifford’s rule) Faulting associated with zones of weakness and thus creates channelways for mantle derives magmas to rise through the crust
  5. Approximate distance between our claim and our eclogitic garnets is 90 kms on average eskers can be several kilometres long Diamond bearing eclogitic xenoliths typically display significantly higher diamond concentrations than do diamond bearing peridotitic xenoliths
  6. Anomaly in our area. Kimberlites are genreally circular, thus a circular anomaly is desired This anomaly is 1km wide, which is an average size of kimberlite Host rocks have little to no magnetic minerals present. Kimberlites contain magnetite, illmenite
  7. Setting up includes getting camp set up, clearing the trees for the ground surveys etc.
  8. $450 includes processing, staff, fuel for the drill, etc. Hy tech drilling
