Dialogue is the theme the Oblates are considering this year. This session looked at our relationship with "the economy" and its local manifestations, taking a theological and a Benedictine perspective.
Catholicism isn't bible based-Yes it is!Tim Kusner
The document addresses a friend's claim that the Catholic Church is not Biblically based because it creates new rituals and beliefs over time. It argues that all churches change over time, and that the Catholic Church is more Biblically based than Protestant faiths because it had the settled canon of scripture first. It also argues that traditions mentioned in the Bible by Paul provide authority for new rituals, and that the Catholic Church's practices can be traced to the earliest Christian communities and apostles like Peter.
While science and religion often come into conflict over explanations of the origin of the universe and basic principles, both also play important roles. Science provides the most concrete explanations we have based on evidence rather than dogma, but should not become a new god or turn people into objects of experiment. Religion is important for unifying people and can provide hope and refuge during difficult times. Overall, science and religion will likely continue influencing people in different ways as representations of hope.

This document summarizes a conference presentation on the changing demographics affecting Benedictine sponsorship of colleges and universities. It notes that Benedictine communities are shrinking while student populations are growing and becoming more diverse. It discusses two perspectives on sponsorship - a formal relationship versus a ministry. It also addresses partnering to achieve common goals like recruitment and retention through cultural competence and mission-centered coordination. Sustaining the sponsorship ministry requires commitment to goals, developing the ministry through formation, and monasteries collaborating to carry it out.

It then analyzes which social media channels libraries find most effective for different purposes and audiences. The document concludes that libraries should have a customized communications structure and use a variety of social media strategically to engage diverse audiences.

Sister Edith Bogue gave a presentation on whether there is still a place for oblates in the 21st century. She discussed how Benedictine values of order, authority, and responsibility contrast with aspects of modern society like inequality, consumerism, and lack of respect for religion. However, Benedictine principles of structured work and prayer, community, and service to others can still provide meaning for oblates in today's world.
Bringing Forth New Things & Old - Treasures for a Post-Pandemic WorldSister Edith Bogue
A retreat grounded in the image of a householder who knows how to bring forth both old and new to meet the needs of the time. What is in our spiritual storehouse? How is it filled and replenished? How can we live in the world after pandemic?
How can the historical church - ekklesia -translate to who we are called to be as church today? Stories of Jesus and the early “church” show us how we can be a true community of faith, across racial, socioeconomic and other boundaries that so frequently divide us. Engage in interactive conversation and activities that explore what it means to be a faith community today.
This document discusses the importance of upholding the Bible as the ultimate authority for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It examines why tradition, reason, community, and other sources are insufficient as foundations of authority. While recognizing the roles of the Holy Spirit and Jesus, it argues that only Scripture can reliably guide the church, as Jesus and the Bible itself point to its divine inspiration and self-authenticating claims. Maintaining the authority of Scripture is vital for theology, leadership, prayer, evangelism, education and dealing with future challenges. Theologians, leaders and members must allow the Bible to determine their beliefs and actions as challenges arise.

This document discusses creation myths from various world cultures. It begins by explaining that creation myths typically involve an eternal being bringing order from chaos, such as a primordial sea. The document then examines different typologies of creation myths, such as ex nihilo creation (creation from thought), earth diver myths (where a deity brings up mud from the sea), and emergence myths (where a people emerge from an underground world). Overall, the document analyzes creation myths from a comparative perspective to understand shared patterns in how cultures explain cosmological origins.
Affluence and Atheism Is there a Correlation.pdfccccccccdddddd
This document discusses the view that affluence can lead to atheism or lack of religious belief. It explores perspectives from the Quran and studies that have found correlations between wealth, lack of difficulties in life, and irreligiosity. The Quran warns of the dangers of taking pride and feeling self-sufficient due to wealth and achievements, which can lead to disbelief, ingratitude, and not acknowledging God. It provides the example of an affluent man who became so fixated on his gardens and wealth that he denied the existence of God and the last day of judgment. Overall, the document argues that feelings of independence and comfort from affluence have the potential to reduce appreciation of existential factors and humility
Religion and Godless Science Fiction explores how science fiction has typically treated religion, ignoring it, deconstructing it, or trivializing it. Notable exceptions include A Canticle for Leibowitz, which engages seriously with both religion and science. The document analyzes how A Canticle portrays tensions between religious and scientific worldviews but presents both perspectives with respect. It argues science fiction would benefit from maturely comparing the perspectives like A Canticle does, moving beyond viewing religion as ephemeral to acknowledging it as a fundamental part of the human experience.
This document discusses the Catholic view of using Scripture in ethics. It outlines several challenges in interpretation, including questions around divine inspiration, infallibility, and inconsistencies between the Old and New Testaments. It proposes guidelines for proper exegesis, including determining original meaning and context, using Christ as the lens, and avoiding proof-texting. The theological task involves combining biblical messages with other moral sources, unlike some Protestants who see Scripture as the sole authority. Tradition, natural law, and Church teachings also provide guidance.

This document discusses what community means for the Duluth Benedictine Oblates. It describes community as a group of people joined by a single hope and method of seeking God under a rule and leader, accepting differences. Key practices that unite the community are common prayer, eating together at a shared table with suitable but not lavish provisions, and common ownership of property to use but not own. The document emphasizes developing relationships based on love, respect, bearing with one another's frailties, and choosing the unity of the community over individual wants by giving recalcitrant members chances to return and prioritizing the good of all.

This document reflects on the passage from John 12:24 "Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just wheat." It uses images from Vincent Van Gogh's paintings of wheat fields to illustrate the concept of a grain of wheat dying in order to produce more wheat. The document reflects on Jesus' words that a grain must fall and die to bear much fruit, and how Van Gogh's paintings depict the growth of wheat from seed to harvest.

This document discusses silence and solitude based on a presentation to Benedictine Oblates. It covers how silence is addressed in the Rule of St. Benedict and references to solitude. It also discusses using solitude for spiritual preparation and avoiding isolation. Monks are encouraged to gradually counteract social withdrawal by connecting with others, while also finding solitude to pray alone without disturbing others.
Psalmody refers to the singing or recitation of psalms. The psalms make up the first book of the Hebrew Bible and are an anthology of 150 individual psalms divided into five sections. They were used in ancient Jewish worship and temple liturgies and were incorporated into early Christian worship. Reciting the psalms is intended to be a daily spiritual practice for formation, praise, thanksgiving, and meditating on God's presence in the world. The genres of individual psalms, like praise, lament, and hymns, can guide different styles of personal and liturgical prayer.
A look at the contemplative practice of Guard of the Heart, growing from the Benedictine spiritual tradition. Given at the Benedictine Center, St. Paul's Monastery, on 24 March 2017.
"Silence" is often discussed as a core monastic practice, but St. Benedict's prescription for custody of the tongue focuses not only on refraining from speech but even more on how we care for community, for the other, and for ourselves when we do speak. This presentation, one in the series on Hard Sayings of St. Benedict, includes a careful study of the idea of custody. Given to the Oblates of St. Scholastica Monastery in 2017.
Stability is one of the three vows that Benedictine sisters and monks take. This presentation considers what this vow might mean for lay people in every day life. Originally given as a retreat at St. Paul's Monastery, St. Paul, Minnesota in 2013.
Opening presentation to a year long consideration of "hard sayings" in The Rule of St. Benedict, written in the sixth century. Sister Edith Bogue considers why people find sayings hard - whether those of Jesus in the Bible or the related ones of St. Benedict in his Rule. Perhaps it is not the sayings that are what's hard...

Presentation from the Duluth Benedictine Oblate Meeting on Sunday, February 14, 2016. Family is the place in which we first learn faith and relationships. It can support and nurture us, but it can also be a source of stress and tension. This session focused on ways that the Benedictine tradition could strengthen family life.

It seems that current missionary work requires spending a lot of money, preparing a lot of materials, and traveling to far away places, so that it feels like missionary work. But what was the result they brought back? It's just a lot of photos of activities, fun eating, drinking and some playing games. And then we have to do the same thing next year, never ending. The church once mentioned that a certain missionary would go to the field where she used to work before the end of his life. It seemed that if she had not gone, no one would be willing to go. The reason why these missionary work is so difficult is that no one obeys God’s words, and the Bible is not the main content during missionary work, because in the eyes of those who do not obey God’s words, the Bible is just words and cannot be connected with life, so Reading out God's words is boring because it doesn't have any life experience, so it cannot be connected with human life. I will give a few examples in the hope that this situation can be changed. A375

The Power of Property (Ch 33)
Let no one presume to give
or receive anything without
the Abbot's leave,
or to have anything as his
own-- anything
whatever, whether book or
tablets or pen or whatever it
may be-- since they are not
permitted to have even
their bodies or wills at their
own disposal.

The Risk of Ego (Ch 57,
(Ch 57, The Artisans) But if any one of them becomes
conceited over his skill in his craft, because he seems to
be conferring a benefit on the monastery, let him be taken
from his craft and no longer exercise it unless, after he has
humbled himself, the Abbot again gives him permission.

The Risk of Authority (Ch 65)
If it should be found
that the Prior has
serious faults, or that
he is deceived by his
exaltation and yields
to pride, or if he should be proved to be a despiser of the Holy
Rule, let him be admonished verbally up to four times.
If he fails to amend, let the correction of regular discipline be
applied to him.
But if even then he does not reform, let him be deposed from
the office of Prior and another be appointed in his place who
is worthy of it.
And if afterwards he is not quiet and obedient in the
community, let him even be expelled from the monastery.

What about today?
What are the
economic pressures
of our culture?
What constrains or
shapes our work?
Our leisure?
How can we be
Benedictine in
this setting?
