People with diabetes who have their blood glucose levels well controlled are less likely to have severe illness or die from COVID-19. A study of over 7,000 COVID-19 patients in China found that those with diabetes required more medical intervention and were more likely to die, unless they had their blood glucose well managed. The study showed that diabetic patients with controlled blood glucose levels were less likely to need intensive care or ventilation and more likely to survive and improve compared to those with poor blood glucose control. Keeping blood glucose levels under control gives diabetics a much better chance of surviving if infected with COVID-19.
