Editor's Notes
Over the last nine years, Texas’ diabetes prevalence has exceeded the nation’s, except in 1996. This is not surprising since diabetes is on the rise and Texas has large at-risk population groups. We expect this trend to continue.
Projected diabetes cases mirror projected population increase.
2008 Texas Diabetes Prevalence by race/ethnicity, independent of age groups. African-Americans have the highest prevalence (13.0%), followed by Hispanics (11.1%), whites (8.3%), and “other” (7.5%). “Other” includes the Asian population. Other has the lowest prevalence among the displayed race and ethnic groups. These differences may reflect limitations of sample size and survey methods in any given year, instead of actual differences among race and ethnic groups. For this reason, diabetes prevalence by race/ethnicity may be reported in grouped years as well as single years.
