This talk was "deployed" in Mindcamp 2018 (http://www.themindcamp.net/).
This document discusses finding the right balance between the minimum viable, minimum desirable, and ideal versions of yourself. It provides examples of activities that could fall into each category, such as basic self-care in the minimum viable, limited video games in the minimum desirable, and an extensive exercise schedule in the ideal. The document encourages prioritizing important tasks first to eat the biggest frog first.
The document summarizes key points from the 1971 book "The Psychology of Computer Programming" by Gerald M. Weinberg. It discusses how egoless programming increases productivity by not allowing programmers to "own" programs. It also advocates for an agile approach, noting requirements often change during development. Finally, it outlines traits of successful programmers, like adaptability and humility, and emphasizes the importance of being willing to learn from mistakes.

This workshop provides opportunities to learn new and better ways to improve your time management skills using the technology that is easily accessible for college students
DevOps does not exist in a vacuum; it rests on a social structure and culture that are intertwined. Hierarchies within organizations, industry connections, and globalization all influence culture. At the same time, culture influences social structure and impacts its effectiveness. To complicate matters even more, the tools we use have an overarching influence. Tools can affect our behavior, how we share knowledge, and our organizational hierarchies.
Often, a particular technology is presented as a “best practice” or as the right way to solve a problem. How do we resolve the cognitive dissonance that arises when the “correct” tool is no longer suited to our current environment? As technology increasingly shapes how we work, how do we determine what technologies to adopt to help effect the changes we want?
In this webinar, Chef Software Engineer Jennifer Davis will help you to frame the choices available to you, identify the weaknesses in your environment that your current tools disguise, and be more effective and deliberate with the tools used in your organization.

This document summarizes a speech about coding for fun and profit. It introduces the speaker, Jeff Schoolcraft, and outlines that the speech will cover why coding for fun is useful, some relevant research on skills acquisition, and ideas for having fun coding both individually and with others. The speech aims to encourage coding for enjoyment rather than just as a job in order to reduce being in a rut and feeling like skills are declining.
Making choices is hard. As developers, we make choices all the time: architectures, frameworks, libraries, cloud providers, etc. So, if you have been around for a while, you probably ended up regretting at least some of those choices.
In this talk, you will learn how to make choices responsibly and what to look out for if you want to minimize the chance of regretting them later. I dive into several situations where the choices we made as a team have gone horribly wrong. Luckily, I learned these lessons the hard way, so you don’t have to!
Now, if only there was a way to prove your newly acquired skills to your peers and superiors. Well, there is: RAD Certification! I will conclude my talk by telling you about this. And as a bonus, if you get certified during the conference, you can score your RAD certificate and corresponding swag!
The Black Magic Of Engineering ManagementSauce Labs
This document discusses various approaches to engineering management at startups. It provides tips for engineering managers, including knowing yourself, getting help from mentors, focusing on communication, hiring for culture over skills, and ensuring work-life balance. The role of an engineering manager is described as unintuitive, individualized, and about constantly iterating based on people rather than processes. Success requires managers to dedicate themselves to learning about the role through books, coaches, and self-reflection.

Technical Excellence Doesn't Just Happen--Igniting a Craftsmanship CultureAllison Pollard
This document discusses igniting a culture of craftsmanship in software development. It argues that technical excellence is necessary for agility, as ignoring technical debt and quality will eventually slow a project. The document outlines some common causes of technical debt, such as cutting corners and overengineering. It also discusses how paying down technical debt through refactoring can improve both internal code quality and external customer outcomes. Overall, the document advocates for continuous attention to technical practices, automated testing, refactoring and simple designs in order to sustain agility in software development.
Practical Cyber: Lessons from 500,000 Miles of Security EvangelismBen Johnson
Ben Johnson gave a presentation on lessons learned from his experience in cybersecurity. He discussed focusing security efforts inward by prioritizing people, processes, and technology. For people, he emphasized hiring for passion and focusing on high-performing teams. For processes, he recommended threat modeling, security hunting, and integrating red and blue teams. For technology, he suggested automation, orchestration, and focusing on capabilities over individual tools. He also advised approaching vendors, resellers, and analysts carefully by understanding their incentives and verifying solutions meet needs. Finally, he outlined responsibilities in cloud security and emphasized the importance of security fundamentals.
We spend so much time focusing on conventional programming. Everyone focuses on standards, code clarity, testing, and what gems to use. Let's chat about what's done before your fingers hit the keys. Let's talk about brainstorming, requirements, stakeholders, mock-ups, and writing solid user stories and acceptance tests with Cucumber. Every project has a story - how will your next one end?

Software Craftsmanship and Agile Code GamesMike Clement
Join us to talk about what it means to be a software craftsman, how the Software Craftsmanship Manifesto (http://manifesto.softwarecraftsmanship.org/) provides a framework for us to improve.
A large part of being a software craftsman is practice. Using different "code games" we can have a full toolbelt of activities that will help us (and those around us) become better at our craft.
Agile software development promises the ability to deliver value quickly. But this isn’t just a matter of process. Uncle Bob says "the only way to go fast is to go well." But how do we go well? As software developers, we can only deliver features as fast as the code base and our skills allow us. Unfortunately the quality of our code base is directly related to our skill in the past.
Musicians and athletes spend most of their time practicing, not performing. As software developers (aspiring craftsmen) we must have practice sessions that allow us to improve our skills and develop better “code sense”. We’ll look at some different “agile code games” that will help us improve our craft.
- Greg Roderick is a practice manager at Infusion, a boutique consulting firm with offices globally. Infusion focuses on new technologies and frameworks for enterprise clients.
- Infusion hires many co-ops and new grads from universities like Waterloo. Over 60% of co-ops join full-time after graduating. They provide technical training through a bootcamp.
- The interview process at Infusion has multiple phone screens and in-person technical interviews to assess candidates' technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and fit with the company culture. Interviewers aim to decide if a candidate is a hire within 1 hour.
This document discusses how combining data science (machine processing) with human expertise (art) can create strategic capabilities for businesses. It argues that some processes benefit from both approaches through systematization, which allows for scale, specialization, feedback, and controlled variation. Building an effective capability requires the right people, processes, and technology, including data scientists, experimental design, custom applications, and APIs. If done correctly, such a combined capability could become a "power" that delivers superior and sustainable returns.
Preservation and institutional repositories for the digital arts and humanitiesDorothea Salo
The document provides advice for humanists on preserving digital scholarship and making preservation someone else's problem. It discusses various options for institutional repositories and digital libraries for housing digital materials. Institutional repositories are described as basic platforms for depositing individual files but have limitations for complex or interactive digital objects. The document recommends exploring what infrastructure an institution already has and getting involved in discussions to implement solutions tailored for the humanities. It also discusses external options like data repositories but notes they often lack support for humanities materials.
This document discusses establishing a DevOps mentality and culture by restoring trust between development and operations teams. It argues that a lack of trust leads to inefficiency, while trust increases speed and decreases costs. The speaker outlines 13 behaviors for building trust, such as talking straight, demonstrating respect, creating transparency, and keeping commitments. Fostering these behaviors can help move from self and relational trust to organizational trust. Reducing bureaucracy, politics and turnover can also increase organizational trust. Overall, the document promotes a collaborative approach focused on shared goals and understanding between teams.

Chasing Elephants - Alberto Brandolini - Codemotion Rome 2017Codemotion
This document discusses common problems that arise when companies experience accelerated growth in developing software. It describes four phases of growth: inception, ramp up, outsourcing, and aftermath. Key issues discussed include a loss of purpose and energy as companies prioritize features and hiring over working with real users and experts, resulting in purposeless code of declining quality over time. The document advocates for creating an environment where developers can learn, experiment, and focus on users' needs rather than production metrics.
Presentation delivered at the NMC Summer conference highlighting the work done to prepare for the launch of a digital badge initiative aimed at engaging incoming Freshmen.

Consistent toolbox talks are critical for maintaining workplace safety, as they provide regular opportunities to address specific hazards and reinforce safe practices.
These brief, focused sessions ensure that safety is a continual conversation rather than a one-time event, which helps keep safety protocols fresh in employees' minds. Studies have shown that shorter, more frequent training sessions are more effective for retention and behavior change compared to longer, infrequent sessions.
Engaging workers regularly, toolbox talks promote a culture of safety, empower employees to voice concerns, and ultimately reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries on site.
The traditional method of conducting safety talks with paper documents and lengthy meetings is not only time-consuming but also less effective. Manual tracking of attendance and compliance is prone to errors and inconsistencies, leading to gaps in safety communication and potential non-compliance with OSHA regulations. Switching to a digital solution like Safelyio offers significant advantages.
Safelyio automates the delivery and documentation of safety talks, ensuring consistency and accessibility. The microlearning approach breaks down complex safety protocols into manageable, bite-sized pieces, making it easier for employees to absorb and retain information.
This method minimizes disruptions to work schedules, eliminates the hassle of paperwork, and ensures that all safety communications are tracked and recorded accurately. Ultimately, using a digital platform like Safelyio enhances engagement, compliance, and overall safety performance on site. https://safelyio.com/

Why Apache Kafka Clusters Are Like Galaxies (And Other Cosmic Kafka Quandarie...Paul Brebner
Closing talk for the Performance Engineering track at Community Over Code EU (Bratislava, Slovakia, June 5 2024) https://eu.communityovercode.org/sessions/2024/why-apache-kafka-clusters-are-like-galaxies-and-other-cosmic-kafka-quandaries-explored/ Instaclustr (now part of NetApp) manages 100s of Apache Kafka clusters of many different sizes, for a variety of use cases and customers. For the last 7 years I’ve been focused outwardly on exploring Kafka application development challenges, but recently I decided to look inward and see what I could discover about the performance, scalability and resource characteristics of the Kafka clusters themselves. Using a suite of Performance Engineering techniques, I will reveal some surprising discoveries about cosmic Kafka mysteries in our data centres, related to: cluster sizes and distribution (using Zipf’s Law), horizontal vs. vertical scalability, and predicting Kafka performance using metrics, modelling and regression techniques. These insights are relevant to Kafka developers and operators.
