What  You  Put  On  Your  Skin  MaAers   •  Your  skin  is  your  largest  organ  and  absorbs  up  to  80%   of  what  you  put  on  it.   •  Just  like  your  liver  and  kidneys,  your  skin  is  an   important  exit  route  for  toxins  like  pesKcides  and   chemicals  that  are  stored  in  your  system.   •  If  your  skin  is  unable  to  eliminate  these  toxins  you  get   symptoms  like  acne  and  other  skin  condiKons.           Fact:  Women  use  an  average  of  12  products  each  day     containing  160  ingredients.  Men  use  6  products  with  85     ingredients.

ConvenKonal  Personal  Care   Products  Can  Cause  Dis-­‐Ease   Many  Americans  have  yet  to  learn  about  the  important   role  personal  care  products  play  in  their  overall  health.   Did  you  know?  Hot  flashes,  allergies,  eczema,  hormone   dysfuncKon,  inferKlity  problems,  immune  disorders,  migraines,   depression,  and  cancer  could  be  due  to  your  body  care   products?

Current  U.S.  Laws  Are  Inadequate   Loopholes  in  U.S.  federal  laws  allow  the  cosmeKcs   industry  to  put  unlimited  amounts  of  chemicals  into   personal  care  products  with  no  required  tesKng,  no   monitoring  of  health  effects  and  inadequate  labeling   requirements.         Fact:  Current  cosmeKcs  laws  in  the  U.S.  date  back  to  1938.     CosmeKcs  are  among  the  least  regulated  products  on  the   market.  
  • 5.           FDA  RegulaKons   The  FDA  does  not  review  –  nor  does  it  have  the   authority  to  regulate  –  what  goes  into  cosmeKcs  before   they  are  marketed  to  salons  and  consumers.        Fact:  100,000  chemicals  are  used  in  the  beauty  and  self  care   industry.    Less  than  10%  of  them  have  been  tested  for  safety.     None  have  been  tested  for  how  they  interact  with  each  other.     Fact:  The  U.S.  has  banned  11  chemicals  from  personal  care     products  while  the  European  Union  has  banned  1100.

Toxic  Ingredients  101   Parabens   Found  In:   Shampoos,  moisturizers,  shaving  gels,   personal  lubricants,  topical     pharmaceuKcals,  spray  tanning     soluKons,  make-­‐up  and  toothpaste.       They  are  also  used  as  food  addiKves.   Other  Names:   Methyl-­‐,  ethyl-­‐,  propyl-­‐,  butyl-­‐,  and   isobutyl-­‐  paraben.   Parabens  are  a  preservaKve  with  anK-­‐bacterial  and  anK-­‐fungal  properKes   which  are  linked  to  breast  cancer,  hormone  disrupKon,  allergic  reacKons     and  inferKlity.

Toxic  Ingredients  101   Petrochemicals   Petrochemicals  are  produced  as  a  byproduct  of  the  disKllaKon  of  gasoline     from  crude  oil.    They  are    toxic  to  the  nervous  system  and  carcinogenic.     Petrochemicals  suffocate  and  age  the  skin  while  disrupKng  the  skin’s  natural     ability  to  eliminate  toxins.   Found  In:   CosmeKcs,  including  foundaKon,   moisturizer  and  lipsKcks.  Most  plasKc     packaging  is  made  with  petrochemicals.   It  is  also  used  to  make  anKfreeze  and    brake  fluid.   Other  Names:   Paraffin,  mineral  oil,  polyethylene     Glycol  (PEG),  diethanolamine  (DEA),     methanolamine  (MEA),  butylene     glycol,  ethanol,  ethylene  glycol,  EDTA   (ethylene-­‐diamine-­‐tetracetaKc  acid).   Propyleneglycol,  propyl  alcohol,  coca midopropyl  betaine,  parfum  or     fragance.

Toxic  Ingredients  101   ArKficial/SyntheKc  Color   ArFficial  colors  are  derived  from  petroleum,  acetone,  and  coal  tar  and  are   carcinogenic.  They  are  linked  to  cancer,  ADHD  in  children,  are  a  skin   irritant,  disrupt  the  reproducKve  organs,  and  are  a  respiratory  toxin.       Found  In:   Toothpaste,  mouthwash,  lipsKck,     shampoo,  hair  dyes,  lip  balms,  lip     pencils,  lip  gloss,  foundaKon,  skin     creams  and  loKon,  mascara,  etc.   Other  Names:   FD&C  or  D&C,  followed  by  a  color     and  a  number,  colorant,  or  lake     dyes.     Example:  FD&C  Red  No.  6  /  D&C   Green  No.  6.  Blue  Lake  Dye

Toxic  Ingredients  101   ArKficial/SyntheKc  Fragrance   Found  In:   Shampoos,  deodorants,  shaving     creams,  loKons,  etc.   Other  Names:   Parfum,  perfume,  fragrance     Warning:   Even  items  labeled  as  “unscented”     may  sKll  contain  arKficial  fragrance!   SyntheFc  fragrances  may  contain  hundred  of  chemicals  that  are  known  neuro-­‐   toxins.  They  are  considered  to  be  among  the  top  five  known  allergens  and  are   recognized  as  both  triggering  and  causing  asthma  aAacks.    They  are  also  linked     to  migraines,  immune  system  damage,  sensiKzaKon,  brain  damage,  hormone     disrupKon  and  cancer.

Toxic  Ingredients  101   Sodium  Lauryl  Sulfate  &  Sodium  Laureth  Sulfate   Found  In:   90%  of  the  personal  care  products  that   foam  such  as  shampoo  and  toothpaste     as  well  as  in  engine  degreasers,     car  washes  and  garage  floor  cleaners.   Labeled  as:   SLS,  SLES,  SDS,  ALS,  Sodium  Pareth     Sulfate,  Sodium  Dodexyl  Sulfate,     Sulfuric  Acid,  Monododecyl  Ester,  Sodium Salt,  Sodium  Caprylic  Sulfate,  Sodium   Oleic  Sulfate,  Sodium  Stearyl  Sulfate,    Sodium  Dodecanesulfate   Sodium  Lauryl  Sulfate  is  a  detergent  and  surfactant  that  damages  the     skin’s  immune  system  by  causing  the  layers  to  separate,  inflame,  and  age.     Disguised  under  many  names,  SLS  allows  40%  more  toxins  to  enter  the  body     through  the  skin  and  contributes  to  yeast  infecKons  and  hair  thinning/loss.

Toxic  Ingredients  101   Triclosan   Found  In:   AnKbacterial  hand  soaps  and  some     toothpastes   Labeled  as:   Triclosan,  triclocarban   Triclosan  is  a  syntheKc  anKbacterial  ingredient  registered  by  the  EPA  as  a     pesKcide.    It  causes  cancer  in  humans  and  contributes  to  the  creaKon  of     “super-­‐bugs”  that  are  resistant  to  anK-­‐bacterial  agents.

Toxic  Ingredients  101   Phthalates   Found  In:   Anything  that  contains  arKficial     fragrance,  including  deodorants,     perfumes,  shampoos,  soaps,    detergents,  nail  polish,  hair  spray,    loKon,  body  sprays,  etc.   Labeled  as:   Phthalates,  fragrance.   Phthalates  are  used  in  combinaKon  with  arKficial  fragrances  as  a   solubilizer  or  denaturer.  It  is  a  known  endocrine  disruptor  –  mimicking     hormones  and  causing  reproducKve  and  neurological  damage.
