Café Design
May 3, 2017
For our café design, we want to bring the relaxed and comfortable feeling of a coffee
shop to the library. This atmosphere will help reduce the stress on students who are hard at work
in the library while also making it more convenient for students to get something to eat.
The proposed location of the main café area is the first-floor computer lab. This section
of the library is seen as soon as you enter the building, so its location will attract customers. The
first-floor is already the designated “loud” floor so sound from a café would not be intrusive. The
computer lab has two smaller rooms directly to the side of it which are currently utilized as
offices. The far office will be transformed into the kitchen area. Having the kitchen in the far
back corner of the library behind closed doors will help reduce the noise. The other office will be
the ordering counter. This immediate café area will hold around 20 customers. Additionally,
there is a parking lot outside of the back-right corner of the library. A parking lot will be
necessary for outside vendors, such as Starbucks, to deliver the needed ingredients and
equipment to the café. A door entry can be put in the kitchen for the use of the vendors. In this
proposed location, there is also potential for an outside deck. Because there is a large drop off
outside of the computer lab, a potential deck would not allow students to enter or leave the café
without coming through the library. On the other hand, the deck would make the green area
behind the library livelier, allow students to enjoy nice weather while still being in the library,
and make Brinser and Ober seem less secluded and closer to the library. The deck area would
have seating for an extra 24 seats. Our inspiration for the deck came from the many students that
use the BSC patio as a homework spot when the weather is nice. The deck will also include a
retractable canopy or umbrellas on each table to provide shade.
Our design also allows the café atmosphere to spill out into the main floor of the library
and not just be contained in one room. This idea came from the countless number of students that
use the Blue Bean as a homework area. Couches, chairs, and bar top tables will be placed along
the windows to allow students to do their school work in the café setting while being away from
the immediate source of noise. Additional group tables and another bar top table will be placed
in the “spill out” area as well. This allows for group work to be done in the café setting. There
will be seating for 43 in the main spill out are and seating for 30 in the small spill out area near
the fireplace.
We think utilizing as much natural light will draw students to the café and make it a
viable space for both eating and school work. The impact of natural light has an outstanding
effect on enhancing mood and productivity. Large windows would be added in the immediate
café area to take advantage of southern exposure and sunlight can be directly received in the
outdoor seating area. The seating along the wall of windows also takes advantage of light.
Venetian shades will be placed in the windows to block unwanted light without obstructing the
view. LED lights will be used in the ceilings and lights will also be placed on the floors of the
deck and the walls outside of the library.
Sound from the café is a big concern in a library setting. Noise will be reduced by placing
the kitchen in the back corner behind closed soundproofed doors. Although the glass walls
dividing the main café from the main spill out area and the main spill out area from the small one
are not the most absorbent to sound, they will break up the sound path. Sound absorbing panels
will be placed on the walls in the spill out area. These panels can be disguised as artwork. Sound
absorbing ceiling tiles or an acoustical cloud will be placed on the ceiling. The cloud also
reflects natural light, is humidity resistant, and has a class A fire rating. Additionally, rubber caps
will be placed on chair legs to prevent noise from students moving the furniture.
Finally, we want to use different Starbucks stores from around the world as our
inspiration for the library café. All recently built Starbucks are LEED certified so they are the
perfect inspiration since the college is trying to go green. Starbucks is also a place that many
workers and students go to get work done while they are having a cup of coffee or a small meal
and we want to bring this to the High Library. We think that having an outside vendor would be
a huge selling point for this college. Many students look for familiar eateries on campus when
they are applying to colleges. Having a Starbucks on campus would bring in more students to
this college, rather than having another Blue Bean based café that no one has heard of.
Furthermore, many students that are already at Elizabethtown college leave campus daily to get
Starbucks. This money that is being devoted to gas to get to these places as well as the money
actually spent on the food products could be going to E-town College instead if a Starbucks was
present in the library. Starbucks already offers a college and university store program. With this,
you get a Starbucks menu, equipment, and training and support for student workers. You also get
to assist in the design of the café.
