The ancient rite of "Funkenfeuer" was traditionally held around Easter in communities, where people believed it ensured good crop yields and community well-being. Children would collect wood and the largest piles were rewarded. Over time, rural depopulation, modernization, and the loss of traditions have socially excluded and isolated elderly residents. Revitalizing this fire ritual could help empower aging rural populations by reconnecting them to community memories and enabling self-empowerment through participation.

Cultural landscape as place for civil society engagement in heritage manageme...heritageorganisations.eu
Landscape has become a focus point of interest in the last 15 years. This is also mirrored in international conventions. So was landscape introduced as specific catagory into the world heritage conevtions of UNESCO. The EU Council of Ministers has drafted principles and guidelines on spatial development, which stress the great importance of landcape for identity and social well being and the need for a good landscape management for all types of landscapes, including urban landscapes and degraded landsapes. Last but not least the Council of Europe has formulated the European Landscape Convention, which sets great value on the participation of the civil society in developing and managing the landscape. The cultural aspects of landscape have been neglected in many countries for a long time, defining landscape as a pure feature of nature. But more and more the cultural aspects of landscape, including the tangible and intangible cultural heritage, have become a focus of research and understanding. Landscape, and especially the cultural heritage, have become important factors for identity building. In all aspects of research, communication and management civil society can play an important role and people can engage themselves. This can be done through prospection projects, archaeological excavations, heritage management programmes, the construction of cultural paths and many other activities. Such projects help to inform people about their own landscape at their own doorsteps and make them wardens for a good landscape management and heritage protection. The lecture shall show the potential of (cultural) landscape as a place for civil society to engage and give examples of how a positive engagement of people for their landscape can be achieved.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Design brief (refurbished)
1. the rite
The rite „Funkenfeuer“ (literally „spark“ and „fire“) is an ancient rite reaching back to the me-
diaeval ages.
It is a fire rite held yearly in the time around easter. People believed, that the well-being of
the community (e.g. crop yield) was depending on the success of the rite.
In former times for example children (the generation of our grandparents) got one day off
from school to find as much wood as possible. The biggest amount was rewarded
with another day off from school. All in all the yearly efforts to get the fire as
huge as possible were embedded in a complex setting of various
community processes.
2. qualities
What is interesting to us, are the inclusive effects of this rite.
As the activities were related to the entire village
community, they might have had a strong
approach on:
• inclusion
• neighbourhood bonding
• local-identity.
3. i s e s u
What especially concerns the generation of our grandparents is the ongoing loss of traditions
and rites like the “Funkenfeuer”.
This kind of loss (of traditions, intergenerational collective memory, and neigh-
bourhood-identity) is also an expression for social exclusion of elder-
ly people enhaced by modernization and economization. These
processes are accompanied by processes of anonymization.
The exodus to the city effects the overaging of rural
regions the degeneration of infrastructures and the
erodation of social community structures.
What stays are old people more or less left alone in
reverse-engineered villages. The former
experienced and lived community
bonding rites have become to
individualized memories.
4. d e s i r e
The task is to find a tool that empowers the aged people in rural regions to self-empower,
participate and co-create in social society. The rite “Funkenfeuer” should be used an a (pos-
sible) anchor point to revitalize their knowledges and memories and make use of it.
Within that general frameset we would like you to think if there could be any tool that makes
it easier for aged people to involve themselves or that empowers themselves compensating
bodily evoked barriers to redesign this rite, and what they associate with it. For example may-
be some kind of an adapted fireplace could be a helpful tool to rethink the setting for the
rite, but this does not necessarily have to be the product.
