1. ‘I wouldn’t mind
Naomi’s bank balance’
Naomi Campbell, Limavady
Another famously named local woman,
Naomi Campbell, 31, has had a very
different experience with her name.
Unlike my own namesake, who is the
Nation’s Sweetheart, Naomi’s does not
have such a glittering reputation!
“I’ve been Naomi Campbell since
I got married in 2007. I always have
people commenting about my name,
like when I’m signing for deliveries and I
have to give the men my name for the
electronic keypad, they always laugh. One said: ‘It’s not every day I get
to deliver a parcel to Naomi Campbell!’
Naomi’s name rarely goes unnoticed, especially in 2012 while she was
going through treatment for breast cancer. Now recovered, she tells us
about the nurses’ reactions.
“I was continually attending different doctors and nurses and they
always laughed and joked about my name. The chemo nurse never
called me Naomi Campbell, always saying, ‘Oh, the model is in for
treatment today’, instead. I’ve modelled in a couple of charity fashion
shows and on one occasion I was having my photograph taken for the
newspaper. The photographer asked my name and when I said ‘Naomi
Campbell’ , he burst out laughing and thought I was being funny as the
famous Naomi Campbell is a model! It took me a few minutes to convince
him that Naomi Campbell was actually my real name!”
Naomi sees the positives with sharing a name with such a high profile
celebrity, even if it is one who is known as much for her fiery temper as
she is for her beauty.
“I really enjoy having the same name as a famous person as it always
amuses other people! The main comment people make when they hear
my name is: ‘Oh, I hope you don’t have a temper like the famous Naomi
Campbell!’ I usually tell them I’m much more pleasant than her, but
wouldn’t mind having her bank balance!”
And these local
ladies have famous
namesakes too...

Sinead, 24 from Ballykelly,
explains that her famous name
was no coincidence and was
actually a carefully thought out
decision.
“I was named after the real
Sinead, her song was a number
one hit the day I was born. And
we share the same birthday too!
People always become more
interested when I tell them that
I found out we have the same
birthday when I was 18. They
are always like: ‘no way, really?!’
“I get so many comments
about my name. Everywhere I
go I get: ‘Can you sing?’ or get:
‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ sung to
me by people thinking they are
funny!”
Not only is there the
famous singer with this name,
a character on the teen
soap Hollyoaks, introduced
in 2010 is also called Sinead
O’Connor, meaning a whole
other generation who may not
remember the singer, are still
recognising the name! This new
surge of comments about her
name didn’t go unnoticed by
Sinead.
“I noticed straight away! A
lot more people were passing
comments about my name, as if
I didn’t already get enough stick
for it!”
Sinead O’Connor hit the
headlines again last year after
her open letter to Miley Cyrus
went viral, and worries for
Sinead’s mental health were
voiced again – understandably
so after her well-publicised
battle with depression that
has overshadowed her singing
career in recent years. During
the Miley Cyrus drama, our
Sinead was getting a lot more
attention for her name than she
has had in quite a while.
“I got a lot of comments about
her antics last year! I always joke
with them that I’m also a loose
cannon and how I’d love her
voice but not the shaved head!
I don’t mind being named after
a celebrity however I do get it
everywhere I go, it’s like a joke
that never gets old!”
‘I was named
after the real
Sinead’
