DEREK SEWALL
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am a Bentley University student working towards a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science
currently seeking employment in a field that will allow me to utilize my skill set. My specialty lies in
mathematics, specifically problem solving and data analysis. This has proven useful many times in the
past. It is my belief that any problem can be solved easily and efficiently if looked at properly.
As a student, I have always been the most proficient in math-based courses. I received the award
for the Highest School Grade on the American Math Competition in 2009. Engaging in such logic-based
activities and courses trained me how to effectively solve problems both inside and outside the classroom
environment.
This skill set proved useful as the Kitchen Manager of Pogo’s Breakfast & Café, where I was often
tasked with running the operations of the entire establishment in place of my employers. I would work the
kitchen, cooking orders and organizing the stock as well as handling suppliers and making important
decisions in the interest of customer relations. In my current position as Assistant Kitchen Manager at
Uncommon Grounds, not only do I work the line, cooking and preparing orders, but I also keep track of
inventory, as well as manage a database which I created for my employers that records food costs and
profit margins for each menu item.
Even though my math skills are so pronounced, I make it a point to take all of my areas of study
seriously in order to become a well-rounded individual with diversified talents. I currently hold a business
minor and am also working to earn a minor in psychology. I believe that, while statistics and data analysis
are extremely important details in the operations of every business, the factors that lead to the results are
nearly equally as important; that is to say, the importance of the “what” just surpasses that of the “why.”
This is why I chose to study psychology in accompaniment with mathematics. I am confident that with my
knowledge and belief system, I will be a great asset to your agency. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Derek Sewall
