What are “Demographics”?
Demographics are widely used metrics to determine who, what age, income level and
geographical area a product is suitable for.
“statistical data relating to the population and particular groups within it”. (Dictionary)
Demographics…
Why are they important?
They are important to companies to measure how “well” their product is preforming.
They use demographics to see who a product is best for, who can purchase it and if it
would be interesting to their age group.
The Demographics are the “Audience” of a product. Think of Mercedes-Benz, they
appeal to the higher end, upper class consumer.
Why they are important continued…
● Demographic data is used by businesses to help them understand the characteristics of the people who buy
their products and services.
● With demographics, you can see who your brand appeals to the most by age, location, gender, job title,
income and hundreds of other variables.
● With the right demographic data, you can spend more marketing to your most enthusiastic clients and stop
spending to reach those who aren't interested.

Positioning
We all know by know that a company has to “Position” a product in order to successfully
market it. This is where Demographics come into the picture.
Positioning…
It determines who you are as a BUSINESS. WHO is your ideal target customer?
● Differentiate yourself from the Competitors. ...
● Making developments and pricing decisions. ...
Who buys a Mercedes-Benz???
Going back to the example I mentioned earlier, According to Mercedes-Benz, 64 percent of its buyers are male, 64
percent college-educated, 63 percent in a professional or managerial position, 81 percent married and the median age is
48 and median income $119,500.
This is a prime example of Demographics in Action…
I am fascinated by demographics and how accurate they are.
Age group?
Another classic…Who buys a specific product?
Brands major product offerings are for upper middle class and middle-income class groups. Also, customer groups on
the basis of Gender and Age have been marked by the company so that it can target with products as per their life stage.
Products offered by Pond’s is mainly targeted at mass market and has been positioned as soft and gentle moisturizing
nature products.
Bottom Line?
A Company has to have an effective DEMOGRAPHIC strategy in order to run a
successful business. Without it, you don’t have a successful product. Without this you
cannot run a successful marketing plan.
