Read the following narrative and create an entity-relationship diagram (ERD) using the notation
shown in class. You can use Lucid Chart or any other drawing tools. Specify all entities
(including weak entities), attributes (specify identifiers), and relationships between entities.
Ensure that you document any assumptions you make concerning the narrative. Any questions
concerning anything, either in the narrative or left out, should be posed to me. Place your name
and section in your document.
Narrative:
The International Secondary School is located in Charlotte, NC. You have been hired by the
school to migrate their school records from a series of spreadsheets into one centralized
relational database. As part of the systems requirements process, the following information about
how the school uses its data has been uncovered:
Requirements:
When a new student comes to the school, the school administrator records his/her details. The
administrator records the student’s first name, last name, date of birth, home address, gender,
medical conditions, school year, and school registration date. Every student must have one
contact person (usually a parent or guardian) in case the school needs to make contact. A contact
person may be responsible for multiple students (in the case of siblings attending the school).
The contact’s name, address, phone number and email address are recorded by the school.
Teacher records are also maintained by the school and include name, office location,
qualifications, and contact number. Qualifications consist of a degree name, school, and year
obtained.
The school offers the same basic curriculum every year, which means that the same courses are
offered year after year. Occasionally, a new course will be offered. Each course has a number,
subject (math, history, etc…), name, required status, and credits.
Once a student is registered, they are assigned to classes. A class is an occurrence of a specific
course. An example of a class would be “French 201, 10am-11am, Tuesday, Mr. Smith, class
quota: 25 students”. A student will be assigned to many different classes. A class will have
many students assigned. A single teacher teaches each class. However, a teacher at the school
may teach numerous classes.

Twice a year (December and May) students sit for examinations for each class. The school
records each student’s individual result for each class examination in the form of a percentage,
grade (A, B-, etc…), and teacher comment.
Submission:
1. Name your document with your last name, section, and deliverable number (e.g.,
hoque_002_del01.pdf)
2. Ensure you have submitted your assignment to D2L. Many times, you have loaded your
assignment, however, you have not submitted and I, therefore, do not have access to it.
Also, ensure the document you submit to D2L can be downloaded and opened. If for
whatever reason, I either cannot download your document or cannot open it, that is the
same as not submitting it and you will receive a zero for the assignment.
