The main entrance façade, on South Broadway, presented a quirky
architectural blend of Tudor and Neo -Federalist features.
Until 1931, it featured a nickelodeon, “photoplays” (silent movies), and
vaudeville acts, each accompanied by full orchestra.

8. Community debate ensued as to the most
beneficial use of the site.
In November 1998, Arthur Gunther, editorial page editor of the
“Journal News”, suggested salvaging the front façade to create a
“gateway” to a small village parking lot or vest pocket park, thus
memorializing the historic nature of the site.
BIDDING / BUILDING PERMITS /
CONSTRUCTION PHASE DESIGN
R. Todd Campbell, a local architect (now deceased), was so inspired by
this idea that he prepared a rendering of his vision of such an
arch, which appeared in the Journal News on January 28, 1999
(PICTURED ABOVE).

of the more recently dilapidated 95 year old theater
it has supplanted.

“The original building’s historic significance and its sitting
amongst other venerated structures in the village core called
for a design was at once sensitive to its environment and
responsive to local sentiment.” – Jan Degenshein
