The present and future of Serverless observability
As engineers, we're empowered by advancements in cloud platforms to build ever more complex systems that can achieve amazing feats at a scale previously only possible for the elite few. The monitoring tools have evolved over the years to accommodate our growing needs with these increasingly complex systems, but the emergence of serverless technologies like AWS Lambda has shifted the landscape and broken some of the underlying assumptions that existing tools are built upon - eg. you can no longer access the underlying host to install monitoring agents/daemons, and it's no longer feasible to use background threads to send monitoring data outside the critical path.
Furthermore, event-driven architectures has become easily accessible and widely adopted by those adopting serverless technologies, and this trend has added another layer of complexity with how we monitor and debug our systems as it involves tracing executions that flow through async invocations, and often fan'd-out and fan'd-in via various event processing patterns.
Join us in this talk as serverless expert Yan Cui gives us an overview of the challenges with observing a serverless architecture, the tradeoffs to consider, the current state of the tooling for serverless observability and a sneak peek at some of the new and coming tools that will hopefully inform us what the future of serverless observability might look like.

The OWASP top 10 is as relevant to you as ever; DOS attacks are still a threat even if you can probably brute force your way through it as AWS auto-scales Lambda functions automatically; and did you know attackers can easily steal your AWS credentials via your application dependencies?

In 2011, Thomas Thwaites spent 9 months and £1187.54 and built his own toaster.
In his own words, he described the toaster as a partial success because "for about five seconds, the toaster toasted, but then unfortunately, the elements kind of melted itself". He is right in the sense that his audacious attempt won him fame and attention, and his TED talk was viewed more than 1M times. But judging his creation on its own and it's an abject failure that was 300 time more expensive than a commercial toaster, took too long to build and was utterly unfit for purpose.

In 2011, Thomas Thwaites spent 9 months and £1187.54 and built his own toaster.
In his own words, he described the toaster as a partial success because "for about five seconds, the toaster toasted, but then unfortunately, the elements kind of melted itself". He is right in the sense that his audacious attempt won him fame and attention, and his TED talk was viewed more than 1M times. But judging his creation on its own and it's an abject failure that was 300 time more expensive than a commercial toaster, took too long to build and was utterly unfit for purpose.
As a business that is competing in an increasingly competitive world enabled by advancements in technology, the questions we should be asking ourselves are: "what are the business value, cost and risk in building our own infrastructure vs using a managed service?". Following on the heels of Adrian Cockroft's keynote that morning, Monitoring Microservices and Containers, this presentation went over real world examples of how modern monitoring for microservices wroks.
Seeding a Tree in a Gherkin
When we are working on tests exercising large parts of our software system (e.g. in an acceptance test suite), we often have to set up a considerable amount of data to set the stage for the scenario under test. This might include several calls to cumbersome APIs. At first, such code can be hard do get right. When it is working properly, many times the intention of the setup is greatly hidden in a convoluted mess of code. Therefore, such code can pose a major hurdle for the evolution of the project. Although intensive refactoring can provide benefits, there are things demanding even better readability. At this point, techniques, patterns and tools like Specflow can provide advantages.
In this talk we discuss typical problems faced with the setup of test data and means to address those. We illustrate three cases where non-trivial setup was needed. After understanding the challenges faced we will present and discuss the final solutions. All topics are supported by code examples from a 10+ year project that has faced all of those issues.

Microservices are becoming a popular paradigm in software engineering, but without much specific definition. The idea sounds compelling on paper and can provide real advantages for separation of concerns, system availability, and enabling devops practices. However, microservices come with a set of foundational challenges that must be addressed in order to realise those benefits; first and foremost, what do we mean by "microservices" in the first place?

How serverless changes the cost paradigm
One of the key characteristics of serverless components is the pay-per-use pricing model. For example, with AWS Lambda, you don’t pay for the uptime of the underlying infrastructure but for the no. of invocations and how long your code actually runs for.
This important characteristic removes the need for many premature micro-optimizations as your cost is always tightly linked to usage and minimizes waste. As a result, many applications would run at a fraction of the cost if they were moved to serverless.
The pay-per-use pricing model also enables more accurate cost prediction and monitoring based on your application’s throughput. This gives rise to the notion of FinDev, where finance and development can intersect and allows optimization to be targeted to give the optimal return-on-invest on the engineering efforts.
And by building your application on serverless components, you can also leverage it as a business advantage and offer a more competitive, usage-based pricing to your customers. Which is going to be crucial at a time when businesses all around the world are affected by COVID and are looking for better efficiencies.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
