The document discusses preparing water utilities for climate and weather uncertainty. It argues that while the causes of climate change may be debated, water utilities still need to plan for potential impacts like flooding, drought, and severe weather. The author provides examples of extreme events to consider in planning and resources from the EPA on building climate resilience. Utilities are encouraged to examine various scenarios and prioritize preparations that mitigate their worst risks.
Dealing with Mother Nature's Attitude Problem - v.17Brian Gongol
Whether you believe in anthropogenic climate change or not, there are far more than enough weather-related surprises to go around. And one of the best ways to prepare for them is to be aware of the full spectrum of possibilities using the tools already built for climate-change forecasting. Water-sector utilities should be especially alert to these needs, since water and wastewater are absolutely essential services -- and they're frequently located in places at the greatest risk from surprise weather outlier events.

Extreme weather patterns as a result of climate change can cause a variety of challenges for education and healthcare facilities, including infrastructure and property damage, water shortages, and interruptions to operations. To help you understand how these challenges could impact your facility and what you can do to prepare, we’ve compiled a SlideShare with preparedness tools, guides, and checklists for Education and Healthcare facilities.

Why Michigan floods so much, and how it can be solved.
---
Michigan floods quite a lot, which isn't suprising considering the abundance of bodies of water there. But this problem had become more common and more destructive as of late. Why has this happened, and how can it be fixed without reversing global warming as a whole?

Nature Nights: A Low-to-No Snow FutureDesLandTrust
Mountain snowpacks have historically acted as large, natural reservoirs of water, as well as providing awesome recreational opportunities. In recent decades, however, snowpack has declined—another sign of a changing climate. If our climate continues to warm, snow loss will be exacerbated across the Western US, termed a “low-to-no snow future.” Join the Deschutes Land Trust, Dr. Alan Rhoades, and Dr. Erica Siirila-Woodburn to learn about the possibility of a low-to-no snow future in the Cascades. Dr. Rhoades and Dr. Siirila-Woodburn will offer proactive solutions to both mitigate the extent of and adapt to the changing conditions of a low-to-no snow future. Learn how you can help make a difference in our (hopefully!) snowy future.

Small wastewater plants and lagoon systems needing to meet tougher effluent-quality standards may find themselves in need of additional aeration that their existing facilities are poorly-equipped to supply. A technological solution that takes up almost no space, requires little to no earth work, and can be easily operated and maintained is available.
The nexus between energy policy and water policy hasn't gotten the amount of attention it deserves, and that's something the water sector needs to change
How to Communicate with Boards and CouncilsBrian Gongol
It's not enough to know your stuff (though you should), and it's not enough to be nice (though that's a good practice, too). Community and civic leaders on city councils and governing boards need utility leaders to be good communicators. Here's what they want from you, in their own words.
Getting Your CLAWS into Pump MaintenanceBrian Gongol
Maintenance takes on all kinds of styles and approaches, but anything we can do to make the process more intuitive and easy to hack, the better. In this presentation, we describe a simple mnemonic device -- CLAWS -- to help pump operators ensure they're checking the biggest culprits for trouble before they reach a state of failure.

Dealing with Mother Nature's Attitude Problem - v.19Brian Gongol
Whether you're sold on anthropogenic climate change or not, there's no getting around the fact that Mother Nature has been showing off some of the worst of her bad attitude lately. What are you supposed to do about it if you're a water utility professional? Fortunately, you're not alone, and there are resources you can (and should!) be using right now to help.
25 Ways to Screw Up a Lift Station Design - v.10Brian Gongol

Join this speedy trip through 25 entirely avoidable screwups to see how things can go wrong -- and learn how to make sure they go right next time.
Media relations for the water industry - v.20Brian Gongol
Water issues shouldn't only make the news when something terrible happens. This is a crash course in how to ensure that the public is well-informed about water and wastewater issues, with perspective and advice from a media veteran with more than 25 years of insider experience. Pitfalls to avoid, best practices to put to work, and ideas for putting an extraordinary light on your ordinary work.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

My project named “Event Management System” is software that store and maintained all events coordinated in college. It also helpful to print related reports. My project will help to record the events coordinated by faculties with their Name, Event subject, date & details in an efficient & effective ways.
In my system we have to make a system by which a user can record all events coordinated by a particular faculty. In our proposed system some more featured are added which differs it from the existing system such as security.
Automobile Management System Project Report.pdfKamal Acharya
The proposed project is developed to manage the automobile in the automobile dealer company. The main module in this project is login, automobile management, customer management, sales, complaints and reports. The first module is the login. The automobile showroom owner should login to the project for usage. The username and password are verified and if it is correct, next form opens. If the username and password are not correct, it shows the error message.
When a customer search for a automobile, if the automobile is available, they will be taken to a page that shows the details of the automobile including automobile name, automobile ID, quantity, price etc. “Automobile Management System” is useful for maintaining automobiles, customers effectively and hence helps for establishing good relation between customer and automobile organization. It contains various customized modules for effectively maintaining automobiles and stock information accurately and safely.
When the automobile is sold to the customer, stock will be reduced automatically. When a new purchase is made, stock will be increased automatically. While selecting automobiles for sale, the proposed software will automatically check for total number of available stock of that particular item, if the total stock of that particular item is less than 5, software will notify the user to purchase the particular item.
Also when the user tries to sale items which are not in stock, the system will prompt the user that the stock is not enough. Customers of this system can search for a automobile; can purchase a automobile easily by selecting fast. On the other hand the stock of automobiles can be maintained perfectly by the automobile shop manager overcoming the drawbacks of existing system.
Courier management system project report.pdfKamal Acharya
It is now-a-days very important for the people to send or receive articles like imported furniture, electronic items, gifts, business goods and the like. People depend vastly on different transport systems which mostly use the manual way of receiving and delivering the articles. There is no way to track the articles till they are received and there is no way to let the customer know what happened in transit, once he booked some articles. In such a situation, we need a system which completely computerizes the cargo activities including time to time tracking of the articles sent. This need is fulfilled by Courier Management System software which is online software for the cargo management people that enables them to receive the goods from a source and send them to a required destination and track their status from time to time.

Dealing with Mother Nature's attitude problem - v.19
1. Dealing with Mother Nature’s
Attitude Problem

IAMU Annual Water/Wastewater Operators Workshop
Altoona, Iowa
6. Even if we’re plainly responsible for some of it,
at least some change is entirely out of our hands
7. But: For the water sector, it doesn’t really matter
You don’t have to believe
in human-caused climate change
to do some smart and essential planning
for climate and weather uncertainty
11. Meteor strikes: A far-out possibility
• Manson, Iowa meteor strike
• 74 million years ago
• Created a crater 23 miles across
• Russian meteor strike
• 2014
• Caused 1,000 injuries
12. Meteor strikes: A far-out possibility
556 recorded events between 1994 and 2013
18. Meet 1816, the “year without a summer”
Miniature ice age (cyclical event)
+
Tambora volcano eruption (freak event)
=
Year without a growing season (catastrophic event)
20. We have plenty of domestic volcanoes
• Yellowstone
• Mount St. Helens
• California (7)
• Oregon (5)
• Washington (5)
• Alaska (50)
• Hawaii (6)
• Undersea
22. We face non-greenhouse-gas risks all the time
But for planning purposes,
let’s start with the risks
for which we have
readily-available tools.
That means climate change.
23. EPA forecasts for central states
• Wetter Dakotas (changing upstream conditions)
• More frequent flooding
• More severe droughts
• Lower soil moisture (due to higher evaporation)
• Greater depletion of aquifers
31. Prepare for whichever “worst” you can embrace
If you’re not preparing for
at least a few things
that don’t end up happening,
you haven’t prepared enough
70. What if: Fall lasts later into the year?
• More organic matter in surface water
• Changing patterns of lagoon turnover
• More late-season residential irrigation
74. What if: Flood elevations are under-estimated?
• More vital equipment at risk
• Higher costs for recovery
• Property tax base shrinkage
• Community budgets challenged
102. Think broadly about causes and
think specifically about solutions
Don’t let the politics of climate change
stifle planning for inevitable uncertain events
111. Design for resilience
• Can equipment handle worst-case conditions?
• Can repairs be performed in place?
• Can a lone operator work in an emergency?

118. A few words on decision-making frameworks
• Know your history but don’t be chained to it (big picture)
• Rank preparations by cost vs. probable risk (expected value)
• Mitigate your worst-case scenario first (minimax)
119. A few words on decision error
• Overlooking anything that isn’t recent (recency bias)
• Overlooking anything that isn’t nearby (proximity bias)
• Attention isn’t the same as probability
• High-impact events are usually infrequent
• Tornadoes, floods, droughts, derechos, ice storms, blizzards,
and power outages are all part of every-year life here
