Editor's Notes
The DBE located on the north-west coast of the Black Sea, is the sea’s largest estuary, with a surface area of 1006,3 km 2 , and a volume of 4,24 km 3 . The Estuary is connected with the Black Sea through the Kinbourn strait. The regime of this drowned-river estuary varies from stratified to partially mixed. The sources of fresh water discharge are the Dnieper and Southern Bug rivers. The DBE is the end of the radionuclides’ riverine transport from the Chernobyl accident area to the Black Sea. The radioactive contamination of the DBE offered the opportunity to study the behaviour of dissolved and particulate substances in the transition zone between fresh and salty aquatic systems. The objectives of the study were (i) to test a model; (ii) to analyse the processes governing the radionuclide dispersion in the DBE; (iii) to evaluate the possibilities of using post-Chernobyl 137 Cs and 90 Sr data for tracer studies of hydrodynamics and pollutants transport in the coastal regions of the Black Sea. Calculations showed that more than 90 % of the total inventory of 137 Cs in DBE in spring 1988 was deposited in the bottom sediments while the main part of the 90 Sr (76%) was in the water column.
The ship channel is shown. Along this channel salty wage penetrates into the estuary.
Typical distribution of the currents and salinity in the estuary in summer season are shown here and below.
Along the ship channel of the DBE the density induced wedge of salty Black Sea water results in a deep undercurrent

A reasonable agreement of the simulated temperature, salinity and radionuclides fields with the available measurements was reached.

This 1D model was established in order to analyse and give recommendations to the optimal management of washing out of the occasional high transport of chloride from the mining areas around Krivoy Rog. The model has been set up, calibrated and verified, and a user-friendly graphical interface has been developed during the project.
