The Friends of the Cumberland Trail received $24,000 in federal funding in 2009 to survey historic resources associated with the Dayton Coal and Iron Company. This grant was matched with $16,000 in additional funds. Project activities in phase I included an archaeological survey, GIS mapping, oral histories, research, and a written report on the findings. A final report on phase I was completed in September 2012, with future phases planned to include nominating sites to the National Register of Historic Places and creating a preservation and management plan.
