Part of the cycleway follows the old railway formation through the spectacular
Karangahake gorge. Along the route there are several rail heritage features but
the most notable are the 1070m long tunnel (1903-05) (which is illuminated so
you can bike through it safely); and a large steel truss bridge (1905) crossing the
Ohinemuri River at the eastern end of the tunnel.
Our second overnight is at Waihi, an old character goldmining town. From here

we bike Golden Valley, a delightful little road through farming country before
heading to the Waikato District and the town of Te Aroha in the lee of the Kaimai
Range. After a soak in the hot pools we head back to Auckland.

BEST TIME TO RIDE
The best time to ride the trail is September to May. The Waikato has a temperate
climate so all but the mid-winter months are ideal for riding. The trails are largely
protected from the wind. Forty eight kilometres of the trails are already open
and in use, 47km are completed but yet to be opened, and 5km are still under
construction. The remaining 5km sections are at lakes Arapuni and Maraetai.
