En 2009 l’actualité a offert de nombreux exemples qui illustrent un regain du conflit engagé depuis quelques années déjà entre les principaux acteurs des industries culturelles, ainsi que les pouvoirs politiques et économiques qui les soutiennent, et les communautés d’internautes qui partagent des contenus protégés par le droit d’auteur. Ces exemples démontrent qu’il s’agit là d’un enjeu d’envergure mondiale et dont la nature se révèle être non seulement socioeconomique mais également politique. Alors que ces aspects du peer-to-peer, en tant que phénomène social ayant des ramifications économiques, techniques et politiques, ont été largement traités, en revanche peu de recherches se sont intéressées de près aux instigateurs de ces réseaux (créateurs et administrateurs) au-delà des simples utilisateurs et des « vedettes » du domaine comme Shawn Fanning, Bram Cohen, Janus Friis et Niklas Zennström . L’explication de cet état de fait est probablement liée à la nature de cette activité « souterraine ». Pourtant les questionnements concernant les initiateurs des réseaux de peer-to-peer sont nombreux : quels sont leurs profils sociologiques? Quelles sont leurs motivations ? Comment s’articulent les relations qu’ils établissent avec le reste de la communauté ? Comment gèrent-ils le processus de marchandisation qui gagne immanquablement des projets dont l’origine se trouve souvent dans des initiatives d’amateurs ? Quelles sont les conditions du succès, ou inversement de l’échec, de telles initiatives ? Dans le présent article, nous allons tenter de répondre à ces questions sur la base d’une recherche empirique auprès des créateurs d’une plateforme hellénophone d’échange de contenu.
