Dave Drake was an enslaved African American potter from the 1820s to 1860s in Edgefield, South Carolina who made large pots over 40 gallons in size. He had over 5 masters during his lifetime, learned to read and write, and wrote poetry that he signed on his pots. Hundreds of Dave's pots still exist today and can be worth between $5,000 to $50,000, leaving behind a legacy as one of the first known African American potters.
