Visual analytics combines human cognition with machine computation to help make sense of big data through data visualization and analytics. Dr. Kai Xu's research focuses on developing visual analytic techniques, including the DIVA project which uses visual analytics and analytic provenance to help ground troops understand local social structures in human terrain analysis. The research aims to capture how users make sense of data through provenance and narrative to help with sensemaking and decision making when analyzing large, complex datasets.

An Identifier Scheme for the Digitising Scotland Project
The Digitising Scotland project is having the vital records of Scotland transcribed from images of the original handwritten civil registers . Linking the resulting dataset of 24 million vital records covering the lives of 18 million people is a major challenge requiring improved record linkage techniques. Discussions within the multidisciplinary, widely distributed Digitising Scotland project team have been hampered by the teams in each of the institutions using their own identification scheme. To enable fruitful discussions within the Digitising Scotland team, we required a mechanism for uniquely identifying each individual represented on the certificates. From the identifier it should be possible to determine the type of certificate and the role each person played. We have devised a protocol to generate for any individual on the certificate a unique identifier, without using a computer, by exploiting the National Records of Scotland•À_s registration districts. Importantly, the approach does not rely on the handwritten content of the certificates which reduces the risk of the content being misread resulting in an incorrect identifier. The resulting identifier scheme has improved the internal discussions within the project. This paper discusses the rationale behind the chosen identifier scheme, and presents the format of the different identifiers. The work reported in the paper was supported by the British ESRC under grants ES/K00574X/1(Digitising Scotland) and ES/L007487/1 (Administrative Data Research Center - Scotland).

Distributed Trust Architecture: The New Foundation of Everything
Distributed trust architecture is becoming the new foundation for data sharing and analytics. It involves shifting trust from local and institutional models to distributed models using technologies like blockchain. This allows data and machine learning models to be distributed across organizations and jurisdictions with privacy, transparency, and integrity maintained through distributed ledgers and smart contracts. CSIRO's Data61 is doing extensive research in this area, including applying these principles to federated learning, software supply chains, consumer data rights frameworks, and other domains to enable innovative uses of data while maintaining user trust.

This document discusses how data and AI on Azure can help higher education institutions in several key areas:
1) Achieving a consistent hybrid learning experience for students on and off campus through conversational AI and digital learning assistants.
2) Simplifying end-to-end research processes by addressing big data and AI requirements through Azure services like Machine Learning and Cognitive Services.
3) Assessing student digital interactions and results to predict potential wellbeing issues using analytics on Azure.
4) Building an end-to-end Azure Modern Data Platform to drive business insights from various institutional data domains.
Infrastructure, relationships, trust, and RDA
This document summarizes a presentation by Mark A. Parsons on infrastructure, relationships, trust, and the Research Data Alliance (RDA). The presentation discusses how research infrastructure now requires electronic infrastructure (e-infrastructure) due to data-intensive science. It also discusses how infrastructure emerges through relationships between people, technologies, and institutions. The RDA is introduced as a community working to build social and technical bridges to enable open data sharing across disciplines. Initial and future products being developed by RDA working groups are also summarized.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
