Enterprises’ transition to cloud computing is not simply about outsourcing or applying old technology to new IT processes. It signals a shift in how IT is designed and delivered. Cloud Computing’s ultimate value is realized by significantly reducing lead times needed to enact business change. And, to realize this value a new approach to modeling the new “virtual” data center infrastructure should be considered. The virtual data center ushers in a shift towards: Business-driven policy, control, and management of IT services and applications Automated assembly, control, and coordination of application resources Simple, reusable libraries of application components, connectors, and their lifecycles ... all facets that need to have a consistent, standardized, and comprehensive representation in a declarative data model. Yet this model must remain flexible enough to accurately capture the diversity and complexity of a modern IT operation.
