Les Perelman is the director of undergraduate writing at MIT. He discovered that the length of essays on the new SAT exam strongly correlated with higher scores, regardless of the quality of writing. He found he could predict scores just by looking at essay lengths from across a room. Additionally, factual inaccuracies in essays were ignored by graders. This undermines the goal of improving student writing ability. Perelman has since established relationships with journalists to raise awareness of issues with standardized testing.
