Defining Communication
F r o m t h e l a t i n t e r m
“Communicare”, which means
“ to share” of “ to divide out”

It may also be thought to
originate from another latin
word “Communis” with mean
“ Working together”

O n e o f t h e f u n c t i o n o f
communication is to inform.
This is all are more made
possible through the use of
media.

Media serves as a source and a channel
for relaying information. Information is
c o n t e n t t h a t y o u s h a r e d u r i n g
communication, media and information
makes it imperative for you to be skilled
in the access and use of each of these.
This is where media and information
literacy enters the picture.
• Literacy equvalent to a skill to a Skill.
• The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO), defined literacy as the “Ability to identify,
understand, interpret, create, communicate, and compute using
printed and written materials associated with varying context”
Media literacy, information literacy and
technology literacy.
Information literacy is the ability to identify, find,
evaluate, and use information effectively. Students
learn how to evaluate the quality, credibility, validity
of websites, and give proper credit from effective
search strategies to evaluation techniques. It is also
referred to as digital literacy.
Leaning of Information Literacy
Technology literacy is the ability to help one to
communicate, solve problems, and enhance life-long
learning skills for future progress. Also, it is the ability to
effectively use technology to access,evaluate, integrate,
create, and communicate information to enhance the
learning process through problem-solving and critical
thinking.
Meaning of Technology Literacy
Media literacy provides a framework to access, analyze,
evaluate, create, and participate with media messages
in a variety of forms from print to video to the internet. It
builds an understanding of the role of media in society
as well as essential skills of inquiry and self-expression
needed for democratic citizens.

Literacy and Technology
Literacy.
They all share the common goal of
cultivating people’s ability to access,
understand, use, evaluate,
and create media messages,
information, or content using
information technology.
According to Callison and Tilley (2006), You are a media and
information literate individual if you are able to do the
following?
-Pose worthwhile questions
-Evaluate the adequacy of an argument
-Recognize facts, inferences, and opinions and use each
appropriately
-Deal with quandaries and ill-formed problems that have not
fixed or unique solutions.
-Give and receive criticism constructively.
-Agree or disagree measured against the merits of the issue and
audience
-Extend a line of thought beyond the range of first impressions
-Articulate a comple position without adding to its complexity.
-The media literate
person is in control of his
or her media experiences
because he or she
understands the basic
conventions or various
media and envoys their
uses in a deliberately
conscious manner.
Individual activity
Direction: In a one-whole sheet of paper write a
1000-words blog entry in the form of reaction
paper to discuss what you can contribute to
your community and to your country if you are a
media and information literate individual. you
may use the following to guide you in
developing your arguments:
-Media and information literacy as practiced
on both personal and professional level
-Media and information literacy as expression
of freedom of speech
-Media and information literacy as tool for civic
responsibility and nation-building
ESSAY
ASSIGNMENT
Direction:
In a short bond paper write your routine when you
get home from school. What is the first thing you
do? Is this activity media-related or media-
dependent? Tell the class about your media habits
lifestyles and preferences.
