This document assesses the contribution of water to total fluoride intake in people of various ages in fluoride-endemic and non-endemic areas of Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu, South India. The study aims to determine the quantitative impact of water consumed through drinking and cooking on daily fluoride intake, and to estimate the contribution from commonly consumed foods. Over 60% of daily fluoride intake comes from water used for drinking and food preparation. Infants obtain a higher percentage of daily fluoride from water compared to other age groups. The prevalence of fluorosis is higher in girls and women living in high fluoride endemic areas.
Following an application from Wrigley GmbH, the EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies was asked to deliver an opinion on a health claim relating sugar-free chewing gum to reducing the risk of dental caries. The Panel concluded that sugar-free chewing gum containing bulk sweeteners and high intensity sweeteners neutralizes plaque acids and reduces the risk of caries based on evidence from human studies consistently showing plaque acid neutralization and clinical trials showing reduced caries incidence. The Panel determined that consuming 2-3g of sugar-free gum for 20 minutes at least three times per day after meals is needed to achieve the claimed effect and can be included in a balanced diet, though excessive polyol
The document discusses adding fluoride to sugar as a potential method for reducing dental caries. A WHO study group considered the possibility in 1989 but found information too limited for field trials. Two pilot studies tested fluoride concentrations on dental caries in situ, finding that over 10 ppm fluoride may be needed to see an effect. More research is needed to determine a safe and effective concentration for clinical trials. While all prevention methods should be considered, fluoridated sugar also raises safety, ethical and economic issues that require further evaluation.
This study compared dietary fluoride intake in children aged 4-6 years from communities receiving different sources of systemic fluoride: artificially fluoridated water in Brazil (0.6-0.8 mg/L), naturally fluoridated water in Brazil (0.6-0.9 mg/L), fluoridated salt in Peru (180-200 mg/kg), fluoridated milk in Peru (0.25 mg), and a non-fluoridated community. Dietary intake was measured using duplicate diets collected over two days. Mean fluoride intake was highest in communities receiving fluoridated water and lowest in the non-fluoridated community. The main dietary contributors of fluoride also differed between communities receiving water fluor

The document discusses policies and recommendations regarding different methods of fluoride use for preventing dental caries. It states that community water fluoridation is safe, cost-effective and should be introduced where feasible to reduce dental caries. It also supports salt fluoridation as an alternative where water fluoridation is not possible. The use of fluoride toothpaste is endorsed as the most widely used and effective preventive method, and efforts should be made to develop affordable fluoride toothpastes in developing countries.
This study investigated the association between fluoride tablet use and the occurrence of dental caries and fluorosis among 6- to 9-year-olds in Berlin, Germany who also consumed fluoridated salt. The study examined 583 children and found that longer duration of fluoride tablet use was associated with lower occurrence of dental caries, particularly among children who also consumed fluoridated salt. However, longer duration of fluoride tablet use also increased the occurrence of mild dental fluorosis. While fluoride tablets were effective in reducing caries among children using fluoridated salt, they also increased the risk of mild fluorosis.
The Liverpool Declaration called for action to strengthen oral health promotion and disease prevention globally by 2020. Over 200 participants from 43 countries addressed the need to make oral health an integral part of general health and well-being. The declaration outlined 9 areas of work for countries to focus on, including ensuring access to clean water and nutrition, fluoride programs, health education and lifestyle programs, school-based oral health initiatives, primary oral healthcare, care for older populations, national oral health policies, public health research, and health information systems.
This document summarizes research on areas in Turkey with naturally occurring high fluoride levels in drinking water. It discusses four main areas:
1) Isparta Province, where dental fluorosis was first observed 55 years ago due to waters containing 1.5-4 ppm fluoride. The fluoride originates from volcanic rocks in the area.
2) Near Tendurek Volcano, where severe dental and skeletal fluorosis in humans and livestock was reported 35 years ago due to waters with 2.5-12.5 ppm fluoride. The fluoride was hypothesized to come from volcanic fumaroles or lavas.
3) Kizilcaoren Village, where endemic dental and skeletal fluorosis occurred
This document summarizes the results of a meta-analysis that evaluated the effectiveness of different
concentrations of fluoride toothpaste in preventing dental caries in children and adolescents. The analysis found
that fluoride toothpaste was more effective than placebo at preventing caries, and that higher fluoride
concentrations resulted in greater prevention, with concentrations of 1000 ppm and above showing a significant
effect compared to placebo. The analysis also found that the preventive effect increased with higher baseline
caries levels and with supervised toothbrushing.
