Range of Jobs
The range includes, but is not limited to:
Corporate brochures, employees booklets (guides), annual reports, financial
surveys, financial reports, pamphlets, flyers, forms, posters, adverts, logos,
corporate identities, manuals, corporate magazines, newsletters, letterheads,
business cards, compliment slips, certificates, invitations, postcards,
membership cards, templates, PowerPoint presentations and promotional
items (mugs, t-shirts, mouse pads etc.).
Key areas of responsibility linked to the senior DTP designer’s main function
are as follows (this area relates to your own work as well as the work of
the rest of the design team):
Digital and print layout specialist
This area of responsibility deals with the meeting of and exceeding clients’
expectations within the perimeters of the brief. The designer must ensure:
• the overall visual appeal of the job;
• correct colour usage (colours that compliment each other as well as the
correct usage of pantone / CMYK colours);
• correct typography (font families);
• innovative use of space, colour, text & graphics to enhance the message
being communicated.
Attention to detail
This would cover areas such as:
• always using spell check;
• checking on bold, italics and hyphens that disappear when a document is
converted from Word;
• giving the document to a journalist or (if it is a big job) ensuring it goes to a
6. proof reader;
• checking the corrections when you have made them to ensure they are all
completed correctly;
• consistency throughout the job (headings, space, justification, fonts etc.);
• graphs, pie charts all the same style;
• no hidden text, pull outs are with the correct text; and
• all writing is legible once printed out (if it has a design behind it).
Meeting deadlines
In order to meet deadlines. The designer is expected to:
• prioritise work;
• manage your time effectively; and
• be proactive (communicate via the correct channels if there is a problem to
either get help or re-negotiate the deadline. This must happen well before
the deadline date).
Flexibility
As the communication department’s business is largely project based it is very
difficult to predict when jobs will be coming in and how urgent they will be. As
part of a senior designer’s function he/she must be able to move easily
between jobs without losing momentum or focus and assist the junior
designers to do the same.
Teamwork
Assisting and working with colleagues in a manner that is conducive to the
good of the department. As well as ensuring that the designers are working as
a team and assisting them where necessary.
Initiative
Coming up with innovative, creative solutions to:
• department workflow issues;
• handling and delivering jobs with tight deadlines;
• doing jobs on a tight budget; and
• digital and print challenges.
Client service
This relates to giving service to internal clients (project manager or consultant)
as well as external clients. Dealing directly with internal clients, when required
and ensuring that they receive excellent service.
• returning telephone calls;
• over delivering on promises;
• looking for creative solutions to any problems;
• follow-up where required; and
• general courtesy.
7. Miscellaneous (Other)
This area of responsibility relates to the running of the department to making a
profit. The designer must always:
• check that specs for a job match the quote when preparing for print;
• keep records (Chase) of the time spent on jobs especially doing authors
corrections;
• keep a record (Chase) of jobs done that don’t go to print;
• keep a record (Chase) of colour copies done on the colour copier
(Minolta);
• monitor general costs and expenses in an effort to keep overall
department costs down (telephone costs (under R250 per month), doing
jobs that are not charged for etc.); and
• adhering to all the procedures as laid out by the department.
• Some of the projects that I have been graciously given to complete
and that do not form part of my formal job role and responsibilities
as a Senior DTP Designer, are as follows:
