Kurt König joined the European Commission in October 1986. Since then he held a number of
management positions in the fields of telecommunications policy, industrial policy and
innovation policy . Since April 2004 he worked for the Publications Office.
Before joining the European Commission in 1986 he was employed with the then Deutsche
Bundespost, working in the International Telecommunications Switching Centre in Frankfurt
am Main (1977 – 1982) and subsequently in the Telecommunications Engineering Centre in
Darmstadt (1982 - 86) in the fields of digital switching systems and the standardization of
signalling system CCITT N° 7.
In 1981 – 82 he worked as consultant in Italy and Sudan.
In 1990 he founded the European ISDN User Forum (EIUF) and was the Chairman of the
Steering Committee until the end of 1996.
From April 2014 until January 2017 he served as the chair of the Inter-institutional Formats
Committee (IFC) in charge of the logic/semantic structuring of legal documents.
Since December 2014 he serves as a Member of the Scientific Committee "Pôle de référence
documentaire sur l’Europe" at the University of Strasbourg/FRANCE.
