Areas of Teaching
I have taught in most areas of psychology at some point. At UCC I am co-director of the Masters
course in Mental Health, and course director of the Masters course in Evolution and Genetics and
undergraduate course in the history and philosophy of science. I teach on the social psychology,
applied clinical issues, research methods and advanced research methods courses.
University Service
I serve on the school’s research, teaching and learning, and marketing and promotion committees.
I have served on the ethics committee. At University level I serve on the grant-organising ISS21
committee. I have done guest presentations at the University level on innovative practices in
teaching and learning.
Supervision and Examining
I have supervised over a hundred final year projects and twenty Masters projects to completion
while at Heriot Watt, Birkbeck and UCC. I am currently supervising three PhD students. One of
2. these is studying the effects of pornography, one mating intelligence, and one the use of mind-
reading techniques to reveal human cognitive architecture.
I have been an external examiner for one PhD (Dr Peter Flynn, UCC)
Recent Grant Applications
1) In 2013 I was brought in to design the tools for capturing and analysing data pertaining to
psychological and physical well-being in a large project that links the world-class driving
research centre here in Cork with concerns about wellbeing, greenspaces and beneficial
ecologies. This proposal included the civil engineering and medical departments at UCC to
investigate health-related outcomes pertaining to transport and commuting. I was
responsible for designing the measures of well-being.
2) Following on from this I am Co- P.I. on R.S.A. PhD Bursary award looking into human
factors and road safety in Cork. UCC—Applied Psychology/Civil Engineering.
3) I am P.I. on E.C.H.O. proposal--€220000 for IRC research into the effectiveness of
human interactions in energy optimisation systems UCC/ CIT/Nimbus Technologies
4) Following on from this proposal I am a co-investigator on a new commercial project
(GAME4CON) involving NIMBUS technologies to incentivise and collect data on user
data in and around Cork city to help organise traffic and other resources
5) Co-investigator on R.E.A.L.M. proposal--€220000 for IRC research into dual diagnosis
prevalence and treatment in Ireland. Ethical approval has been given and data collection
has begun on the pilot study for this.
