Title: “Effect of levodopa on postural motor learning in Parkinson disease”
The goal of this project is to understand the degree to which people with Parkinson’s disease can improve
protective stepping responses after repeated external perturbations (i.e. simulated trips). In particular, we
were interested in whether levodopa, a commonly used pharmacological intervention for Parkinson’s
disease affected learning in this population.

Title: “Peripheral and Central Postural Disorders in the Elderly”
This is the first study to relate integrity of the brain’s postural/locomotor circuits to objective measures of
balance and gait disorders in patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease compared to patients with
Frontal Gait Disorders (e.g., vascular parkinsonism). This project will improve our understanding of the
role of the frontal cortex in balance and gait and how cognitive impairments relate to postural disorders
with the goal of improving mobility rehabilitation in the elderly.

  • 2. Updated: September 2016 Career Development Award (CDA-1); (Award #I01BX007080) 9/2014-10/2016 Funding Source: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, RR&D Title: “Effect of levodopa on postural motor learning in Parkinson disease” The goal of this project is to understand the degree to which people with Parkinson’s disease can improve protective stepping responses after repeated external perturbations (i.e. simulated trips). In particular, we were interested in whether levodopa, a commonly used pharmacological intervention for Parkinson’s disease affected learning in this population. Total Amount: $160,983 Role: PI Completed Early Clinical Investigator Award 3/2014 - 2/2015 Funding Source: Medical Research Foundation of Oregon. Title: ““Postural motor learning in Parkinson's disease: Effects of levodopa” The purpose of this project was to characterize the performance and improvement of protective stepping between healthy young, healthy old, individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Total Amount: $19,971 Role: PI 1 R01 AG00645729 5/2014 – 5/2019 Funding Source: National Institutes of Health Title: “Peripheral and Central Postural Disorders in the Elderly” This is the first study to relate integrity of the brain’s postural/locomotor circuits to objective measures of balance and gait disorders in patients with idiopathic Parkinson’s disease compared to patients with Frontal Gait Disorders (e.g., vascular parkinsonism). This project will improve our understanding of the role of the frontal cortex in balance and gait and how cognitive impairments relate to postural disorders with the goal of improving mobility rehabilitation in the elderly. Role: Postdoctoral Trainee (PI: F Horak) TL1RR024995: Training grant to Washington University in St. Louis 6/2010 – 6/2013 Funding Source: National Institutes of Health The goal of the TL1 is to support the research training and career development of clinical and translational investigators to conduct multidisciplinary research with scientists from diverse disciplines. The purpose of this specific project was to characterize the behavioral and neural underpinnings of freezing of gait in people with Parkinson’s disease. Role: Predoctoral Trainee (PI: B Evanoff) T32 HD007434: Training grant to Washington University in St. Louis 9/2009 – 5/2010 Funding Source: National Institutes of Health The goal of the TL1 is to support the research training and career development of clinical and translational investigators to conduct multidisciplinary research with scientists from diverse disciplines. The purpose of this specific project was to characterize the behavioral and neural underpinnings of freezing of gait in people with Parkinson’s disease. Total Amount: Stipend, tuition, and travel Role: Predoctoral Trainee (PI: M Mueller) University of Florida: University Scholars Program 6/2005 – 12/2005 Funding Source: University of Florida Office of Undergraduate Research The purpose of this award was to investigate the impact of upper extremity stretching on shoulder stiffness and injury. Amount: $2500 Role: Undergraduate Scholar
