An assessment of the state of readiness for library automation in ibrahim bad...Alexander Decker
This document assesses the readiness for library automation at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Library in Yola and Ramat Library at the University of Maiduguri. It found that both libraries had poor funding and inadequate infrastructure and personnel to support automation. As a result, the study concluded that neither library was adequately prepared for automation. It recommended that vice-chancellors provide more funding to libraries for automation resources like computers, internet access, and connection to the National Virtual Library of Nigeria. The study used questionnaires, interviews and observations of 27 librarians from the two libraries to evaluate the current state of readiness.
West Meets East: 2010 AzLA Presentationnancydeegan
Nancy Deegan traveled to Japan as part of a fellowship exchange program between Arizona and Japanese libraries. She visited 17 institutions over 9 days to learn about their use of technology for remote access, library services, and information literacy initiatives. While she expected to find progressive technology use, the reality was that most materials remained in print only and remote access was limited. Some libraries offered digital archives and mobile apps, but services were primarily face-to-face. She observed a hesitation to fully incorporate digital materials and services despite trends toward digital libraries globally.
The document discusses the history and functions of national libraries. It begins by explaining that the Nepal National Library was established in 1957 and was initially housed in the Singha Durbar palace. It then provides definitions of a national library from UNESCO as an institution that acquires all published works in a country and performs functions like producing a national bibliography. The summary concludes by listing some of the key functions of a national library as acquiring all domestic publications, compiling national bibliographies, and serving as a national reference center.
1. The Nepal National Library was established in 1957 with a collection of 30,000 manuscripts and printed books purchased from a private collection. It was initially housed in Singha Durbar with limited space and outdated furniture.
2. By the 1950s, with the advent of democracy and growing interest in education, the need for public libraries and library services was felt. Existing academic libraries played an important role in collecting books to support the growing number of schools and colleges.
3. The establishment of diplomatic relations with other countries after 1951 resulted in the opening of missionary libraries like the American Library and Indian Library to promote cultural relations and information exchange.
The document provides information for new students on essential library resources and services at the NTU library. It covers how to get a library membership card, borrowing privileges, library catalog searching, course reserves, research databases, journals, theses, and contact information for librarian assistance. Key services mentioned include borrowing books, using course reserves, accessing electronic resources on and off campus, and getting help from subject librarians.

The document describes a proposed "Training of Trainers for Effective Teaching and Collaborating in Information Literacy" program at the Academic Library of Ar-Raniry. The program aims to develop the librarians' capacity for teaching information literacy to users. It will train them in effective instructional methods and the use of multimedia technology to better meet users' diverse needs. The librarians hope this training will help solve issues like a lack of teaching ability and resources that were identified after an initial information literacy workshop. The overall goal is for the librarians to become professional trainers in information literacy.
