Professional Career History
2011 to date: Health and Safety Manager for South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA)
Responsible for providing strategic and operational management, advice and guidance on a wide variety of health and
safety matters to a diverse organisation employing over 440 people. SYHA has an annual turnover in excess of £43
million and a property portfolio totalling over £500 million. SYHA employs designers and contractors to maintain and
improve its existing properties and build new one. In addition to being Housing Association SYHA is one of the key
players within health and social care in the region. Stakeholders include those from the public and private sector.
Key Achievements
- 70% fewer lost time incidents.
- Efficiency savings from the introduction e-learning and tailored training courses.
- 80% fall in civil claims and compensation payments.
- Developing and implementing a health and safety management system in line with OHSAS 18001
- Development of a health and safety risk register to target resources.
- Wining the RoSPA Gold Medal Award (6 consecutive Gold Awards from 2011 to 2016).
- Maintaining CHAS Accreditation.
- Establishing a Lead Authority Partnership Scheme (LAPS) agreement with Derbyshire Fire Authority. (The first
between a Housing Association and Fire Authority).
- Developing a fire safety risk assessment process and training programme based on PAS 79. This initiative saved in
excess of £60k in consultancy fees. (Zero enforcement action to date).
- The introduction of IOSH Safety Management training for senior and front line managers.

2009 - 2011: Project Manager for South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA)
Responsible for the management of an accommodation based social care project housing and supporting vulnerable
adults with complex needs and high risk profiles, including; drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, mental health
issues, personality disorders and learning disabilities.
Key Achievements
- In 2010 the project won the National Housing Federations ‘What We Are Proud Of Award’ in recognition of its local
contribution and positive impact upon the lives of disadvantages and vulnerable adults.
- The project was cost effective. Our funders estimated that for every £1 of funding received £7 was saved by
reducing the impact those we supported had on statutory services, such as NHS and Social Services.
- The project achieved the highest rating for quality of service delivery when assessed by local government
commissioners.
- The project increased its capacity by 60%.
2007 - 2009: Fire Safety Coordinator for South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA)
Responsible for putting in place processes to ensure that SYHA achieved compliance with the Regulatory Reform
(Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRFSO).
Key Achievements
- Developed processes to enable SYHA to comply with its duties as an employer and landlord under the RRFSO.
- Oversaw the completion of fire safety risk assessments and the implementation of remedial actions plans for over
200 properties.
- Reduced SYHA’s reliance upon external consultants by driving up in-house competency levels.
- Developed and delivered a fire safety training programme for responsible managers. This was extended to external
partners, and also to the National Housing Federation.
2004 - 2007: Fire Safety Officer for South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service
Responsible for working as part of a newly formed community based team to improve standards of fire safety within
the home and reduce incidents of arson. Raising awareness of fire safety through education programmes and
community events targeting high risk, vulnerable and hard to reach groups.
Key Achievements
- Call outs to accidental fires in dwellings within the South Yorkshire region fell by 13% and deliberate fires by 22%
from 2004 to 2007.
- Playing a part in establishing the Lifewise Crucial Crew initiative. Crucial Crew is a personal safety educational
programme delivered to 10 and 11 year olds, which uses real life scenarios to educate, covering issues such as
arson, hoax calls, road safety and fire safety in the home. Having to engage and educate young children taught me
valuable influencing, communication and training skills.
