This study analyzed game reviews from American and Japanese gaming websites to identify cultural differences in how players in the two cultures appreciate games. The researchers collected reviews for 221 games released in both the US and Japan in 2009 from major gaming publications and websites in each country. Their analysis found that while preferences are generally similar, American players emphasize replay value more, whereas Japanese players place more importance on overall polish and are less tolerant of bugs. Japanese players also seem to have lower expectations for Western games. Examining the text of reviews provided insights into these and other cultural differences in game appreciation.
