10. Concepts of Culture and Liberalism
CULTURE
➢ It is derived from the Latin term
"colere," which means “till the
ground” or “to cultivate.”
➢ It can be defined as all the ways of
life, including arts, beliefs, and
institutions, of a population that can
be shared and learned.
“Culture is something that binds us towards the
greatest appreciation of individual differences.”
11. ➢ It is derived from the Latin word
“liber”, which means ‘free’.
➢ Thus, it stood for the end of
autocracy and clerical privileges
and rooted for a government
based on the consent of the
people.
LIBERALISM
“Liberalism sees us as individuals that are bound by
equal rights, making sure that no one is left behind.”

14. JOHN LOCKE

Liberalism", known for his Social Contract
theory of the formation of states.
➢ Locke's two treatises on government
established two fundamental liberal ideas,
namely:
⋄ economic liberty (meaning the right to have
and use property)
⋄ intellectual liberty (including freedom of
conscience).

19. Generalization
➢ To put it simply, cultural liberalism can be understood in the words of Henry
David Thoreau, specifically in his famous statement, "to march to the beat of a
different drummer".
➢ This simply means that "to march to the beat of a different drummer" signifies to
act independently and to behave differently than what is expected or is the norm.
➢ Taking all these factors into consideration, someone who “marches to his own
beat” is a person who is not constrained by social norms or rules.
