Vacation: A time when parents real-
ize that teachers aren’t paid enough
I am happy to
bring our 10th
issue of our Newsletter, when
people ask why this additional
stress every month, I reply, “it gives
me Happiness” because Happiness
is when you feel good about your-
self without the need for anyone
else’s approval and Happiness is
not measured by the amount of
money you have. It is measured by
the wonderful people like you all in
my life. This month article, which
was pestering my mind for quite
some time, to make our friends in-
form, your desire to do Ph.D. is a
costly affair, so prepare yourself
before your start your work. And the
Campus Connect Section, this
month I had a difficult task of select-
ing information from a college which
done so well, Anna Adarsh. It’s an
end of yet another successful aca-
demic year, its time for you all to
spend your time with your loved
ones, Happy Holidays to all.

“Kaasu, Panam, Thuttu, Money, Money”
Why should I do a Ph.D.?
The obvious answer for this question
to others will be “Want to develop
research skills and ideas”, but the fact
for most of today’s Ph.D. aspirants
was they might feel that their talents
are never appreciated and they want
more respect from people around
them. Perhaps they like the idea of
impressing by call their name with 'Dr'
on it.
How expensive is it?
A very common misconception is that
getting a PhD degree is affordable.
Well… at some point during their sub-
mission, some doctoral
researchers find their fi-
nancial situation extraor-
dinarily difficult.
You see, doing a PhD is
very expensive, not only
in time and emotional energy. It al-
ways takes more money than you
think. Even in the best circumstances,
it is rare to find someone with a just-
completed PhD who doesn’t spend
much or took help from friends or
family, or from a financial institution.
Scholars need to ensure that they are
financially secure themselves, they
have to make hard decisions about by
differentiating between their necessary
and optional expenses and how they
will afford to do a PhD
What are the Issues?
You need to think about what is abso-
lutely essential in your life, such as
personal, family, house rent, transport,
food, medical, school fees, insurance,
maintenance, etc.
And there’s some research related is-
sues too:
You may need to buy a new Lap-
top, as you begin the thesis writing
stage. You may have to upgrade
your internet, get a new phone…
“A flight ticket
and a suite in a
star hotel, the
scholar also had
to ensure that a
pick-up was
arranged from
the hotel. Later
that evening the
scholar found
himself buying his
guest drinks at an
expensive bar””
For attending and presenting for conferences, your in-
stitution will never give you “On-duty” you have to go
on “LOP” apart from registration and travel expenses.
This might sound minor, but conference costs build up
over the time of the PhD.
For References, books that you just want to buy for
yourself.
For publishing your papers in research journals, either
people spend huge money to the publications or for the
mediators such as paid journal service providers to
make your paper ready for publishing. (We all know
that preparing your own Research papers is usually
good and less expensive than getting it done by some-
one. But most people just don't have the time.)
It’s tough to do a PhD when you are also working
in a self financing institution, especially difficult to
face the last stage of the PhD – writing – when you
have serious money worries. It’s a time when you
want to have a secure and stable environment so
you can just focus on the task at hand.
Doctoral committees: Money matters
PhD students are not just overloaded with course work;
they are also forced to food expense bills for their mentors,
take classes on their behalf and even abuses. While abuse it
is common for research scholars to be subject to abuse of
power in the form of emotional abuse, being made to take
on additional work, doing personal jobs, even offer bribes
or can also be of “Aruppukottai College” nature.
A usual protocol for doctoral meetings, a Scholars experi-
ence, “A flight ticket and a suite in a star hotel, the scholar
also had to ensure that a pick-up was arranged from the
hotel. Later that evening the scholar found himself buying
his guest drinks at an expensive bar”.
Prepare yourself
Ph.D is little more than an expensive isolation from reality,
you don't really need an expensive Ph.D. to prove your-
self..So it’s as well, as you’re about to start the PhD, to sit
down and think hard about money – what you might need,
and what you are able to put in place, for a long journey.
You do need to ask yourself whether doing a PhD is afford-
able and whether you need to change something about the
way your life is organized to relieve potential financial
pressures. Most of us will tell you it’s worth it, but the PhD
always costs a lot. Don’t try to hide or ignore those con-
cerns at the start. They won’t go away. Doing PhD, is pro-
portional to our savings and expenses.

common
misconception
is that getting
a PhD degree
is affordable.”

There is no such thing as a computer
system without an Operating System. It
is so fundamental, that if one doesn't
understand OS, then they can't very well
claim to know anything about comput-
ing, and this book on OS exclusively
designed to cater for those students who
struggle with complex technologies.
When it comes to understanding the core
components of a computer system,
there's no better place to begin reading
this book. It combines plenty of informa-
tion, flawless concise delivery, and use-
ful exercises. Simplification is started in
the first chapter and continues till last
chapter. Once Dennis Ritchie said
“UNIX is basically a simple OS, but you
have to be a genius to understand the
simplicity” but I feel, just read this book
