Contents:
• What is Cruise Control.
• Advantages of Cruise Control.
• Requirements.
• Downloading Cruise Control.
• Running GP with Cruise Control.
• Down linking options available.
• Examples.
• Facts about down linking cruise.
• Bugs using Cruise Control.
3. Cruise Control
Advantages:
• Accurate steering within the desired zone.
• Smooth hole profile.
• Automated trajectory control by Geo-Pilot tool.
• Use to drill accurate tangent sections for Artificial lift equipment
installation.
• Use for extended reach horizontal wells.
4. Cruise Control
Requirements
• Geo-Pilot tool Version 3.10+
• PWD ver. 3.70
• Geo- Span down linking sys.
• INSITE 6.4.2 will have full functionality incorporated
– 6.3.2 and lower versions require calculator scripts for RT and
Recorded.
5. Cruise Control
• Download
– Use TF Update of 10 seconds
– Uplink to surface via:
• IS VDF Item (Inclination Setting)
• ICS VDF Item (Inclination Cruise control Setting)
• AS VDF Item (Azimuthal Setting)
– ICS will be Data Dependant upon the Inc Cruise being active
– IS will pulse either continuously or periodic
7. Cruise Control
• Download Contd.
– Inc cruise control setting are downloaded initially when
downloading LWD sensors.
– Cruise control setting can be changed later on through down
linking.
– Inclination Cruise must be included in the active list in the
down link tab when downloading.
13. Cruise Control
• Example - Within Tolerances, Algorithm Correction to Maintain Trajectory
No Trend In ABI -
No Change in TF or
Deflection
ABI showing Dropping Trend,
but within tolerances at all
times - Tool Corrects TF and
Deflection to Counter Trend

14. Cruise Control
• Example - Drops Outside Tolerance - Immediately Corrects Trajectory
No Trend In ABI -
No Change in TF or
Deflection
ABI Outside Allowable
Tolerance - Tool Immediately
steers max allowed deflection

15. Cruise Control
Steering Example with Cruise Control.
Steering using ABI Inc @ 25.2o
• Inc setting = 25.2
o
• Tolerance = 0.5
o
• Max. build/drop Def. = 50%
• Aggressiveness factor = 7
• Turn Setting = -10
• Inc range = 24.7
o
– 25.7
o
19. Cruise Control
Steering Example with Cruise Control
• ABI Inc chart when steering with Cruise.
• Smooth steering profile always within range.
20. Cruise Control
• Cruising Facts:
– Cruise Off
• Turns off cruise and leaves current TF/Def Settings
– Use ABI Inc
• Turns Cruise on with Current Config, and uses current ABI as
the cruise inclination
– Cruise On
• Engage Cruise Control at the last settings
– Inclination Setting
• Engage Cruise Control and Adjust Cruise Angle up/down by +/-
12.7 deg in 0.1 deg steps
– Turn Setting
• Engage Cruise Control and add L/R turn to cruise
21. Cruise Control
• Commands Available
• Inc Window Tolerance - Default 0.5 deg
Outside of this tolerance the tool will immediately apply max
deflection up/down
• Max Allowed Deflection Up/Down - Default 60%
Can limit tortuosity/soft landing etc.
Will steer high deflections if combined with turn.
• Factor - Default 7 - Range 0 - 15
Will affect how aggressively the tool responds to Inclination
changes.
Faster drilling - use lower factor
Slower drilling - use higher factor
– Changing config will change settings but not affect cruise
control on/off.
22. Cruise Control
• Coming Out of Inc Cruise
– Any Manual Command Setting
– Any Downlinked TF/Def, TF Corr, Def Corr Command
– Special Home
– Special Reset
• Manual Shortcut will Re-engage Cruise Control
23. Cruise Control
• Known Issues with Cruise Control
– No cruise control option available in new GP-5200
– First Uplink of config may be garbage after down linking a
new config.
• Other Changes
– Tool will no longer react to housing slip when going to zero
deflection or home. (Flag is disabled)
