Charles Dickens was a 19th century British author known for his realistic novels that criticized social issues during the Industrial Revolution. His novels featured a wide range of characters from different classes and occupations. Many of his protagonists faced hardship like poverty or orphanhood. Dickens drew from his own difficult childhood where his family struggled financially and he had to work in a factory. His novels contrasted between the lives of the wealthy and the poor living in slums. They often ended happily to satisfy readers, though his stories brought attention to real societal problems.
