Scholarships to Lesley University
Jessica Ellison and Gordon Callanan, both graduating from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School,
have been awarded the first Full Tuition Scholarships to Lesley University through the Lesley
University/Cambridge Public Schools Partnership. The competitive, merit-based scholarships to
either Lesley College or The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley were initiated in 2007 for students
meeting rigorous academic criteria, with preference given to students demonstrating a
commitment to community and public service.
Ellison will attend Lesley College, and Callanan will attend The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley
in the fall of 2008. Both scholarships are for full tuition and fees, along with a book stipend, for
four years of study, and are awarded annually through a selection process from a pool of
candidates recommended by the CRLS Headmaster. Both students aspire to careers in
education.
“Working together, the Cambridge Public Schools and Lesley University have presented these
two students with a terrific opportunity to reach their goals of teaching others, ideally right here
in Cambridge. I’m excited at their attending a University with such a strong commitment to
public service,” said School Committee Member Fred Fantini.
“For nearly 100 years, Lesley University and the Cambridge Public Schools have shared a
commitment to education, and a spirit of cooperation to the benefit of students of both,” said
Lesley University President Joseph B. Moore. “We’re thrilled to congratulate and welcome
Jessica and Gordon to the Lesley community, and grateful for our continued collaborations with
the faculty and administration of the Cambridge Public Schools.”
All public and charter school students in Cambridge, Boston, Somerville and Chelsea are
automatically eligible for an $8,000 scholarship through Lesley’s Urban Scholars program.
Callanan will attend The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley, and aspires to be an art teacher. He’s
been active in track and field, martial arts, mentoring younger students. The scholarship award
to AIB requires demonstrated artistic talent shown through a portfolio of work, and Callanan’s
teachers describe him as “a humanitarian” whose art pieces portray a “whimsical nature with
characters that are magical.”
Ellison, attending Lesley College in the fall, aspires to be an elementary education teacher.
She’s been on staff at the after school program at the Haggerty Community School for the past
three years, and is active in Girls Taking Action, and the Cambridge Summer Youth Jobs
program. A member of the CRLS Future Teachers Club enrolled in honors and advanced
placement coursework, she’s already participated in first year education courses at Lesley,
affirming her goal of becoming a teacher.
