Criminal Justice System
• Components are police, courts, and
corrections
• Corrections: 4 basic functions
4 Basic Functions/Sanctions of
Corrections
1. Retribution- revenge for victim and society.
2. Deterrence- discourage from future crimes.
3. Rehabilitation- return as law-abiding citizens
4. Social protection- limits freedom of offenders
and prevents society from having to deal with
them.
Juvenile-Justice System
• 3rd
largest category of criminals is juvenile
offenders
• Younger than 18
• Different and less specific laws
• Not as responsible as adults
• Now have same legal rights as adults, but
less severe penalties
Writing
“Juvenile offenders should never be tried as adults.”
Do you support or oppose this statement? Defend
your response.
Think about the following while supporting your
response: Are some crimes committed by juveniles
so heinous that they demand adult punishment? Are
juveniles capable of fully understanding the
consequences of their actions?
