2. Some would say that, in essence, the expression
of art is a form of communication which exists
to convey ideas between individuals. If that
is the case, then the mastery of this language
is something every designer should aspire to
attain. That being said, one must still keep in
mind that the idea (or content of what is being
communicated) is still the most fundamentally
important product that results from the creative
process. It is my goal as a designer to best
utilize the inherit nature of art as a tool. For me,
rather than aspiring to simply create a stunning
presentation, ultimate satisfaction comes from
shifting the focus to the underlying concept and
inspiring others to the possibilities of what an
empty canvas can eventually become.

4. Caricatures and digital
rendering
Here Adobe Illustrator was used to compose the black and
white vector art of the caricatures. Digital rendering was then
completed in Adobe Photoshop using gradients, glow effects,
and soft brush presets.

7. Graphic design at
FedEx Office
Over the years of my employment at FedEx Office, designing
various documents such as flyers, business cards, coupons,
and notices became part of my everyday responsibilities. This
particular flyer was posted as an 18”x24” poster and was also
used as a bag stuffer for letter size envelopes. The photograph
of a storefront, products offered, and company logos were all
compiled from numerous advertisements and have been used
with permission.

8. Business cards and
coupons
The coupon shown
on the left was put
together utilizing
Adobe Photoshop
CS3. The final product
was then used as a
bag stuffer for three
FedEx Office locations
located in the greater
Lansing area. As
part of the design,
the professional
photograph seen
in the coupon has
been included with
permission. Also,
located at the bottom
of the page is a
business card that
was created for a
group project within
the MSU curriculum.
The background
was created in
Adobe Illustrator,
and the remaining
text was typeset in
Photoshop CS3. It is
intended to represent

in waterfront and
fountain development.

9. Book promotion
Overall layout of this flyer was created in approximately 2
hours using InDesign. Original Dragonfly artwork has been used
with permission by Metaphor Maker Press LLC.

10. Photo manipulation
In this example highlight effects, a sepia filter, and contrast
enhancement were tools used in Adobe Photoshop. In
addition, glow effects were used to emphasize the text and
the character of the sky was enhanced using cloud formations
from a landscape photograph.

11. Photo editing and
enhancement
Here contrast, saturation, and clone stamping were used to
create the final product. Special attention was given to the
tree bark on the left in order to create a more pronounced
foreground element.

12. Site planning and digital
rendering
Original site plan and section elevations were done in ink on
vellum. Final renderings were completed with texture brushes,
lighting effects, and small sections of photographs.

13. Three dimensional
modeling
The site plan here was part of a design project assigned
by the Landscape Architecture program at Michigan
State University. The basic layout was created in CAD, and
subsequently finalized in Google SketchUp. The 3D warehouse
feature was used to represent various components such as
doorways, benches, pedestrians, and planting forms.
