19 sept12 is social exclusion still important for older peopleILC- UK
The concept of social exclusion explicitly recognises that material exclusion is both caused by and causes exclusion from other domains essential for wellbeing, and builds on a longstanding tradition within public policy and social science research. However, the terminology ‘social exclusion’ is perhaps most synonymous with the former Labour government, with the coalition government having disbanded the Social Exclusion Unit Taskforce. In its place there exists something of a gulf in terminology to replace the usage of ‘social exclusion’ in policy-terms, although the concept itself continues to play some part in policy making, while the term itself is still widely used within academic research and in EU and UN policy
In comparison to children, young people, and families, social exclusion among older people has received little attention. This is despite the fact that it is perhaps among this group that the notion of social exclusion is most pertinent, with older people at high risk of social isolation and loneliness, as well as exhibiting substantial inequalities in income and housing. In addition, within the extant evidence base, there has been comparatively little longitudinal research into social exclusion patterns among older people.
At this event, ILC-UK presented the results from a report examining social exclusion among older people, 'Is Social Exclusion still important for Older People?', sponsored by Age UK. The work investigated trends in the number of socially excluded people, and examined their outcomes. Other speakers will also contribute to a debate that explores the underlying question of whether social exclusion should remain part of public policy and if ‘social exclusion is still important for older people’.

The demand for bandwidth is soaring worldwide. More people in more places are connecting for work,
entertainment, social communication, and education, and they’re increasingly using mobile phones, tablets,
and other easy-to-carry devices. And in many developing parts of the world, mobile phones are often the only
internet-access technology that’s both affordable and available.
Satellite Backhaul has historically allowed MNOs to expand their coverage. However, these opportunities were
traditionally restrained to very remote locations, driven by government incentive programs. Satellite was perceived
as a slow, expensive and cumbersome solution, able to capture a mere 1.7 percent of global installations of base
stations (2019 Satellite Market Share by BTS Backhaul Technology).
Whitepaper: Staying Ahead of the Changing Security Threat LandscapeST Engineering iDirect
The satellite industry is undergoing its greatest transformation with the launch of thousands of satellites
across all orbits and the convergence of the telecom ecosystem. With this progression brings an increase of
vulnerabilities and threat vectors. It is more imperative than ever that government and military entities
continually improve their security posture to remain resilient in the face of adversaries.
Whitepaper: Satellites Role in the Transformation of Enterprise DigitalizationST Engineering iDirect
Satellite technology has, is and will continue to play a critical role in enterprise markets, particularly for remote
and underserved locations. This is evident in the energy sector where satellite communications are often the
lifeline, if not the only link, for personnel and critical assets such as those in offshore oil platforms. However, urban
centers require satellite connectivity as well, and many industries including retail and banking have adopted
satcom solutions as part of their primary mode of communication. Back-up services likewise take up demand
for both remote and urban premises.
The rise and growth of streamed video has completely
revolutionized how we watch TV and consume content.
During 2020, this has been magnified as people on every
continent have dealt with the effects of the COVID-19
lockdown, faced with months of isolation. The go-to
entertainment solution has been streaming services and
this has been reflected in a sharp rise in subscriptions.
In the advent of key technology innovation breakthroughs and their implementation in next generation satellite
networks, it is a good time to take a step back and reflect how these technologies will enable new capabilities and
improve civil, government and military missions and operations. Convergence is the central theme across these
new generation of satellite networks that reunite space segment, ground segment, user segment and the service
layer. With the adoption of 5G and cloud-based architectures convergence also applies to the increased demand
for hybrid networks combining satellite and terrestrial technologies into a single network. The main purpose for the
convergence is to remove the complexity of ground segment networks and cater for an orchestration of services
across these networks, allowing for new operational scenarios and supporting increased scalability and flexibility for
globally dispersed government and military operations connecting fixed, on-the-move and on-the pause platforms
on the ground, in the air and at sea.
Demand for the Internet of Things (IoT) is exploding, as more and more companies in a wide range of industries
look to capitalize on the promises of IoT to improve their efficiency and increase their revenues. The opportunity
for satellite to play a role in the IoT ecosystem is here, but the satellite industry has to overcome the challenge of
integrating seamlessly into the complex IoT framework. However, with an appropriate understanding of end-user
needs and careful planning, satellite service providers have the chance to fulfill the unmet, voracious demand for
all things IoT and reap the rewards of this technology’s explosive growth.
Whitepaper: Gaining Operational Advantage Through Innovative Milsatcom NetworksST Engineering iDirect
For defense agencies, gaining an operational advantage is always a critical objective. In today’s evolving world, that means military organizations need a sophisticated satellite communications network that can accommodate increasingly dispersed and complex operations while providing the utmost security and resiliency. This white paper focuses on building a multi-layered security and resiliency network in line with the six key requirements necessary to obtain information superiority, tactical advantage and successful operations.
Enterprises all over the world are joining the cloud revolution and moving their vital operations and IT infrastructure to the cloud—a trend that has increased in recent years and that shows no signs of slowing down. This development has major implications for the satellite industry: To keep pace and stay relevant and useful to enterprise clients both present and future networking infrastructure needs to migrate to the cloud. By embracing this shift, the satellite industry can create enormous opportunity by improving its technology through scalability and delivering its services in a space where enterprise clients are increasingly operating
Why Enterprises Are Moving to the Cloud:
It’s Good Business
The shift toward the cloud is a sound business practice for modern enterprises, delivering cost, efficiency, and competitiveness benefits in myriad ways.
Cost Savings
Moving to cloud-based operations pays off many times over for enterprises by allowing them to embrace digitalization without incurring the significant costs that would accompany such an undertaking if it were datacenter based. By relying on cloud-based infrastructure, enterprises don’t need to invest in the capital expenditure of a new or upgraded data center, or its attendant new hardware and real estate. They can save on operating expenses, since they don’t need to fund the utilities and workforce needed to maintain the data center. And they can reduce the cost of their IT departments by shifting from fixed-cost models to pay-as-you-use models.
When it comes time to launch a new application, an enterprise can realize even more cost savings through the cloud. Using a pre-cloud model, enterprises would run their applications using either their own data centers or a costly third party-run data center in both opex and capex. Enterprises can now develop and deploy an application with no capex investment, since all the application’s data is stored in cloud-based infrastructure. And since the cloud features a pay-as-you-use cost structure, all the increased expenses of launching a new application can be immediately covered with the savings and profits realized by the use of the application itself resulting in a faster return on investment. And since enterprises are outsourcing their infrastructure needs, they are free to focus their time and money on data analysis and interpretation of the application’s results.
Compared to
The 5G architecture standard has changed the communications landscape, and it is now punctuated by real
opportunities for satellite to play an integral role. Acting as a banner for all standardization technologies,
including Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Metro Ethernet
Forum (MEF), the 5G architecture standard potentiates both satellite’s place in mainstream connectivity, and
full interoperability within the end-to-end 5G network.
Advances in telco, IT and new space bring greater opportunity, but also new complexities that need to be solved for that opportunity to be realized. And much of this falls on the shoulders of the ground segment industry.
Intelsat FlexMove provides a breakthrough in speed, reliability and flexibility for communications-on-the-move (COTM) users even in the most remote and hard to reach locations.
The satellite sector is undergoing the biggest transformation in its history and at the root of it all is New Space innovation. We’re moving into new orbits, moving towards new, configurable satellite designs and new business models. And as we saw last week during the Satellite Show’s LEO Forum, interest in this new era is surging as operators, launch providers, service providers and equipment manufacturers learn more about what is expected of them and how they will need to collaborate. This move to NGSO (Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit) is now pushing the entire ecosystem towards new ways of thinking.

Creating Education Opportunities in Haiti - Case Study
1. CREATING
EDUCATION
OPPORTUNITIES
IN HAITI
ST Engineering iDirect and LBiSat help the village of
Kay Anj Village in Haiti come online.
The Challenge
The Kay Anj Village School in Cap-Haitien, Haiti is part of
the Kay Anj Village, which sits on 40 acres of land in the
small village of Dekle. Tthe village provides homes, schools,
playing fields and a church for orphaned and abandoned
children in the Kay Anj D’ayiti (Angel House of Haiti).
The project was the vision of Debbie and Bill Harvey. The
couple founded Helping Haitian Angels (HHA), a non-profit
organization, in 2008 to provide medical care, shelter, food
and clean water for the children of Cap-Haitien. The Kay
Anj Village School will provide 121 children from
prekindergarten through sixth grade, the opportunity for
education—and for a promising future.
“For the children of Haiti, education doesn’t just
mean opportunity, it also means freedom.
Having access to the Internet opens up a world
that never before existed – to future job and
entrepreneurial opportunities to healthcare and
more.”
Debbie Harvey
Founder
Helping Haitian Angels
2. But being able to provide the opportunity associated with
education requires resources—resources that are not so
easily at their disposal as to the rest of the world. Foremost,
that means overcoming one fundamental challenge: the
fact that only 10.6% of the Haitian population had access
to the Internet, according to the ITU.
Access to quality education is essential to both the social
and economic development of Haiti. Yet, the majority of
schools in Haiti receive minimal government support, lack
qualified instructors and are a significant financial burden
on low-income families. Furthermore, according to
statistics from USAid:
• Haitians aged 25 years and older receive on average
only 4.9 years of education and only 29% attend
secondary school
• More than 80% of primary schools are privately
managed with minimal government oversight
• Half of public sector teachers in Haiti lack basic
qualifications and almost 80% of teachers have not
received any pre-service training
This introduces the risk that a generation of Haitian youth
will not have the necessary knowledge and basic skills to
succeed in the work force.
The Solution
In this region of Cap-Haitien, fiber and cellular connections
are scarce at best. In areas where they are available, the
time and costs associated with installation can be
prohibitive. Satellite is a key enabler for this region since it
is easily deployable, provides a reliable connection and is
cost-effective when compared with other access technologies.
For the children of Kay Anj Village, access to the Internet
not only means hope for education, but hope for a more
successful future. According to the Center for Global
Development, in developing, low-income countries, every
additional year of education can increase a person’s future
income by an average of 10%.
To help bring the Internet to the children of Kay Anj Village,
HHA partnered with satellite technology providers ST
Engineering iDirect and LBiSat to deliver broadband
connectivity to the Kay Anj Village. Combining an
Evolution® satellite modem from with Ku- band bandwidth
from LBiSat, Debbie and Bill Harvey have taken a major
step in providing the children of Kay Anj Village with the
value of distance-learning, which includes:
• The ability to access world-class educators and
collaborate with other students, all of whom are
located around the world, via teleconference
• Real-time access to the latest learning resources and
capabilities made available via the Internet
• The benefit of tapping into social networks and other
digital resources that enable them to advance their
communications skills, both personally and
professionally
• The opportunity to learn and develop reading and
writing skills that can be passed down to next
generations, as well as previous generations
The Kay Anj Village School is part of the first phase of development for the Kay Anj Village,
which sits on 40 acres of land in the small village of Dekle in Haiti.
3. “Providing education not only changes the lives of this
current generation of the Haitian population, but future
generations to come,”says Debbie Harvey.“Parents of
students of the Kay Anj Village School, who themselves
were never taught to read and write, have come up to us
to tell us that their children can now educate them, too.
That is a true generational impact.”
When iDirect and LBiSat first arrived in Kay Anj D’ayiti,
priority number one was getting power to the buildings
in the village. Historically, the challenge for Cap-Haitien
was that residents typically only experienced one or two
hours of electricity per day. That is slowly changing as a
local power facility is providing immediate and ongoing
power— critical to the big plans that Debbie and Bill
Harvey have for the 40 acres of land that comprise the
Kay Anj Village.
Following the work of a master electrician who wired up
the buildings in the village, iDirect personnel worked
alongside local villagers to assemble the VSAT equipment
and prepared for connection. Power was finally turned on
at 4 p.m. on the last day that the group was on the ground.
One hour later, connectivity was live.
From there, LBiSat worked from the LBiSat network
operation center to commission the Evolution remote.
The team trained a local Haitian on details of the system.
This would allow him to help with any issues that may
arise with the system in the future—essentially putting
the power and control of the connection into the hands
of the community of Kay Anj D’ayiti.
“The power of connectivity comes not only in the
technology being provided, but in the form of knowledge
that we can leave behind with the community. In essence,
this is a whole new opportunity for information,”says
Darren Ludington, regional vice president of sales,
Americas, ST Engineering iDirect.“The more power we put
into the hands of the people of Kay Anj D’ayiti, the better
their ability to leverage this powerful connection for
generations to come.”
Changing Lives
Technology holds the power to change lives and truly
make a different for those who previously had no access to
information. The day that connectivity was turned on at
Kay Anj D’ayiti was one that marked a major turning
point—not only for this small region of Haiti, but for the
entire country.
“The day we opened the doors to Kay Anj Village School
was a day that changed the lives for hundreds of individuals
in Cap-Haitien. The dedication and generosity of both
iDirect and LBiSat cannot be understated in helping HHA
build a brighter future in Haiti,”says Debbie Harvey.
“The more power we put into the hands of the
people of Kay Anj D’ayiti, the better for their
ability to continue to leverage this powerful
connection for generations to come.”
