Data and its Analytics is the whole more
than its parts
It is nice you are reading this and take some of your precious time to let me introduce you a
little bit of who I am, what I did and my passions. I am a colombian guy who decided to study
system engineering and then to do a master about industrial engineering. While I was studying, I
decided to begin another master in computer science and mathematics in a foreign country
which was my first experience out of the house and far from my family, homesick (I know).
Then, I began a career over data analytics that, by the time it was known as data mining,
artificial intelligence or statistics. So, I specialized in data bases starting from the open sources
engines and the meeting commercial ones (so far, I have met mysql, postgresql, sql server,
oracle and the hopefully powerful sap hana).
I came back to my country having in mind that I’d start a new professional path as a data quality
and mining coordinator. So, it was my first formal job in this amazing racing of the data
manipulation. Of course, I never left my background of an industrial and system engineer. I had
the opportunity of mixing knowledge in both fields. Until now, I built my career as data scientist,
passing through all fields involved. Thanks to that I considered myself as a complete business
consultant, because I fulfill the five main skills of a data scientist: good programmer in several
programming languages to tackle the specificities of a particular business problem; to have solid
quantitative (and qualitative, my addition) skills; good and assertive communication to present
results regarding the audience; solid business understanding; and finally, I consider myself
creative, innovative and restless (sometimes uneasy), I love to do researching.
Aside for a while of presenting myself, from my point of view, analytics is immersed at any stage
of life. Even waking up every morning may have implicit behavior patterns that are not easy to
see and if you stand to consider the insights to be gained are immensely helpful. For example,
identify groups of people are more productive in their jobs according to your morning routine.
It's just a vague example but it is the present of what analytics is today in the world. The number
of apps and the vast oceans of information we face requires skills that provide the techniques
and methodologies needed to discover knowledge. That is nothing more than an interpretation
and a summary that provides a simple but a deep view of the information obtained,
transformed in knowledge.
I have worked in analytics, business intelligence and information systems for 9 years, since
academia to today. All of them compound an area that It is an extremely interesting and gives us
the power to discover (magic word that only exploit our children and we forget in adulthood)
new facts, new patterns, new behaviors, new things that would be unthinkable in any
information and that analysis simple could not be obtained (even Descartes knew that).
Analytics is a word that has been underestimated and at the same time implied. We believe that
the power is on analysis using Excel and PowerPivot tools that facilitate our work, of course. But
you do not think that analytics is also covering the whole pyramid to discover new knowledge,
that ever Fayyad created in 1996. This involves processing data from the lowest to the executive
level, with all kinds of databases tools including reports and dashboards.
Moreover, my experience let me give you tools to provide to a company the ability to discover
new insights. Automating this is also key and fundamental to gain new knowledge online. The
latter is a soundly but real word. I believe in the power of artificial intelligence, machine
learning, statistics and databases. All this, data mining, has the power to give any business new
things to discover and are not easy to do, at first glance.
I am Pablo Andrés Pérez, a System Engineering, and I have a Master of Science degree in
Industrial Engineering from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. I was a candidate for Master
in Computer Science and Computational Mathematics at the University of São Paulo (Brazil). On
the international market, my profile is considered as a Data Scientist. I hope to contribute my
knowledge and experience in a mutual exchange of knowledge and skills with you.
Thanks for reading this and hope to find you in a new opportunity.
Kind regards
Pablo Andrés Pérez Quevedo
