Informality is a major problem for emerging economies like Peru. One example is the artisanal fishery sector in Peru, where 70% of activities are informal. This leads to negative consequences like unsustainable fishing practices that damage natural resources and lack of safety regulations. It also makes the economic contribution of the sector unclear. To address this, the government needs to promote inclusiveness, public policies to formalize activities, and help form trade unions to negotiate collectively for fishers.
