TOPIC: QUANTIFIERS-COUNTABLE &
UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS
TEACHER: ENERJETA HAJDERAJ
Results of learning by
competencies of the field
according to teaching topic:
THE STUDENT:
•Identify countable & uncountable nouns
•Identify quantifiers
•match appropriate quantifiers to countable
and uncountable nouns
A QUANTIFIER IS A WORD
OR A PHRASE WHICH IS
NORMALLY USED BEFORE
A NOUN TO INDICATE THE
AMOUNT OR QUANTITY.
QUANTIFIERS CAN BE USED WITH PLURAL
COUNTABLE NOUNS
AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS.
QUANTIFIERS ANSWER THE QUESTIONS :
“HOW MANY’ or “HOW MANY.”
QUANTIFIERS MUST AGREE WITH THE NOUN.
THERE ARE THREE MAIN TYPES OF
QUANTIFIERS:
QUANTIFIERS THAT ARE USED WITH
COUNTABLE NOUNS.
QAUNTIFIERS THAT ARE USED WITH
UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS.
QUANTIFIERS THAT ARE USED WITH BOTH OF
THEM
(COUNTABLE &UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS).
COUNTABLE UNCOUNTABLE BOTH

A LOT OF
ANY
Anything that can be counted, whether singular – a dog, a
house,
a friend, etc. or plural – a few books, lots of oranges, etc. is a
countable noun.
QUANTIFIERS
SINGULAR
QUANTIFIERS
AFFIRMATIVE NEGATIVE INTERROGATIVE
A There ‘s a book
on the table.
There isn’t a
book on the
table.
Is there a book
on the table?
AN There is an ice-
cream in the
fridge.
There isn’t an
ice-cream in the
fridge.
Is there an ice-
cream in the
fridge?
WE USE A FEW (SOME BUT NOT MANY)
SEVERAL (MORE THAN TWO BUT NOT MANY)
AND MANY ( A LARGE NUMBER OF) WITH PLURAL
COUNTABLE NOUNS .
EX.
A FEW TEAM MEMBERS GOT SICK.
THERE ARE A FEW BOOKS IN THE BOOKCASE.
THERE ARE A FEW STUDENTS IN THE CLASS.
THEY EXPERIENCED SEVERAL LARGE STORMS.
IT TOOK ME SEVERAL MINUTES TO RESPOND.
IN FACT, HE HAD DISPLAYED THAT EMOTION SEVERAL
TIMES.
MANY PEOPLE WORRIED ABOUT THEM.
HE SAID GOODBYE TO HID MANY FRIENDS.
DID YOU GET MANY RESPONSES TO YOUR
ADVERTISEMENT?
An Uncountable Noun is a noun we cannot add a number to or
we cannot count.
EX. 1. LIQUIDS(WATER) 2. FOOD(BREAD)
3.MATERIALS(IRON) 4. IDEAS(ANGER)
WE CAN’T ADD –S TO AN UNCOUNTBLE NOUN
For example :
I can say : 1 book , 2 books etc.
BUT I can’t say : 1 butter, 2 butters etc.
So butter doesn’t take a plural. Butter is an uncountable noun.
In this case we have to say: Much butter not Many butter.
the opposite of much is little.
Much means --- a large quantity; little means---- a small quantity
A little is between this two: so not much , not little
A little means --- a certain quantity of something that you cannot
count.
SOME & ANY
SOME + PLURAL COUNTABLE NOUNS / UNCOUNTABLE
NOUNS
( AFFIRMATIVE)
THERE IS SOME DUST ON THE FLOOR.
THERE IS SOME CHEESE IN THE FRIDGE.
THERE ARE SOME BOOKS IN THE BOOKCASE.
ANY + PLURAL COUNTABLE NOUNS / UNCOUNTABLE
NOUNS
( NEGATIVE+ INTERROGATIVE).
THERE ISN’T ANY MILK IN THE BOTTLE.
THERE AREN’T ANY CUSHIONS ON THE SOFA.
IS THERE ANY SUGAR IN YOUR COFFEE?
A LOT OF – LOTS OF-- A LOT
WE USE THEM IN AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES.
A LOT OF = →COUNTABLE NOUNS: THERE ARE A LOT OF
PEOPLE.
→ UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS: THEY HAVE A LOT OF
MONEY.
A LOT OF = LOTS OF
WHEN IT IS CLEAR WHAT WE ARE REFERRING TO: “A LOT.”
DID THEY HAVE ANY MONEY? THEY HAD A LOT.
DID THEY BUY ANY HAMBURGERS? THEY BOUGHT A LOT.
PUT THE CORRECT FORM OF THE GIVEN
WORDS INTO THE SPACES.
USE QUANTIFIERS.
1. John is eating _________________( potato)
2. Is there __________________ (water) in the jar?
3.There are _____________ (strawberry) in the
fridge.
4.i don’t have _________ free time these days.
5.There aren’t __________ good restaurants in
this part of the town.
6. I have got __________CDs but very _________
space.
