The Costa Concordia was a cruise ship that wrecked off the coast of Italy in January 2012, resulting in 32 deaths. The ship struck rocks just off the tiny Tuscan island of Giglio and quickly began taking on water. The captain, Francesco Schettino, was later convicted and sentenced to 16 years in prison for abandoning the ship before all passengers had been evacuated and for causing the accident by sailing too close to shore.
