Students will compile data from various websites to prove

                          alternatives.

carbohydrates and protein.
Students will learn how to collect data from various websites to find the nutritional
breakdown of foods – specifically fast food.
Objectives: Students will learn how to navigate the world wide web and find
information that is relevant to the topic of:
Nutritional information of fast food.
Alternative choices in fast food restaurants (ie apple slices instead of fries; milk

Class discussion will also include how to track food at a restaurant or fast food
establishment. In addition to tracking their meals for one day, students will also write
down a typical meal they would eat at a fast food restaurant.
Day 2. Discuss food journals and watch, “Pyramid Power vs Junk Food Bandits
Basketball Movie”: There are breaks built-in the short film designed for short discussions
about nutrition and activity. Next: how do we make better choices?
Day 3. Review of Day 2. What did the movie tell us about activity and eating healthy
foods? Brainstorm healthy choices using the overhead book reader for the entire class to
see and participate.
Introduction to nutrition websites. On the overhead, I will show students how to access
websites to help them find nutritional information from their diaries. I will have a journal
of my own to use as an example.
Discussion about: calories, fat, carbohydrate and vitamin content of foods. Specifically,
fast food. How can we make changes?
I will gather some ideas of restaurants and fast food places my students have visited in
the past week and have the website information on hand to access the following day if
needed.
Day 4. Each computer station will have an index card with a fast food website that
contains an extensive database of fast food restaurants. The index card is an important
part of this exercise. The idea is not to have students “surfing the web” but rather use the
internet with a specific purpose and goal in mind: to find the nutritional information of
foods listed on their food journal.
Each computer will have an index card with
http://www.fastfoodmarketing.org
I will be on hand to help with any difficulties accessing the site and to help find the menu
items that match the student’s journal sheet.
Students will write down the calorie, fat, carbohydrate and sodium content of each food
from one of the fast food meals on their journal sheet. I will ask them:
        Does your food have vitamins?
Does it have a lot of fat?
What kind of substitutions can you make so that your meal is healthier?
Does your restaurant serve fruits and vegetables?
Let’s think of anther meal you could eat at this restaurant that is good for your
        body!
Day 5. With our newfound information, we will create new meals that we can eat at our
favorite fast food restaurant.
Other topics:
It’s okay to eat French fries, milkshakes, etc. sometimes. Just not all of the time!
Fast food restaurants can have good nutritional options. Let’s pick those instead!
Let’s write a sample menu of what we will order next time we visit our favorite
        fast food restaurant.

Wendy’s: http://www.wendys.com/food/NutritionLanding.jsp
Other Restaurants; http://www.fastfoodmarketing.org/basic_nutrition_search.aspx

Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction
Resource Student: More one-on-one help with searching websites.
                  Extended due dates if needed.
Resource students may only need to provide two meal examples
                  rather than four.
Gifted Student: Gifted students can create a presentation of their nutritional
findings in another tech format such as powerpoint. They can
take before and after pictures of their meals and provide the
nutritional content and an explanation of why one meal is more
                  nutritious than the other.
