cord blood albumin assesment.pptx
1. ASSESSMENT OF CORD BLOOD ALBUMIN AS A
PREDICTOR OF NEONATAL JAUNDICE IN TERM
AND PRETERM NEWBORN
NAME OF STUDENT: Dr. Lakshit Bhalala
DESIGNATION: First year resident
DEPARTMENT: Pediatrics
2. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
AIM
To study the correlation of cord blood albumin level and requirement of
phototherapy in term And Preterm neonates.
3. OBJECTIVE
To predict proportion of neonates requiring Phototherapy for
neonatal hyperbiliruinemia based on cord blood albumin level at
birth.
To estimate correlation between the level of albumin in cord blood
at birth and of Serum bilirubin up to neonatal periods of life if the
baby appears icteric clinically.
4. • INCLUSION CRITERIA
Term and preterm babies.
• EXCLUSION CRITERIA
Rh and ABO incompatibility
Birth asphyxia
Baby delivered by vaccum and forceps
Cephalhematoma
Neonatal sepsis
Meconium-stained amniotic fluid
Newborn needing resuscitation
Baby on Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
Respiratory distress syndrome
Intraventricular hemorrhage 2
5. • STUDY DURATION
18 months
• SAMPLE SIZE
A sample size of approximately 400 will be studied.
Sample size is calculated by formula = 4pq/L
2
6. MATERIAL AND METHODS
• The parents of eligible participants, after taking ethical clearance and
consent, will be subjected to detailed history- taking, including maternal
medical diseases, mode of delivery, consanguinity, APGAR scoring and
oxytocin use. Neonates will be assessed for gestational age by Ballard
scoring and birth weight by growth curves.
• The use of phototherapy or exchange transfusion will be recorded as
indicated by the American Academy of Paediatrics guidelines for
management of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.
7. • 5 ml of cord venous blood will be collected after clamping the cord.
The collected sample will be tested for serum albumin level using
bromocresol green method (BCG) and Serum bilirubin using
colorimetric dual wave length reflectance spectrophotometry.
• Appropriate statistical method will be used for analysis after collecting
data.
8. PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY
• As limited studies has been conducted on this topic in local
population, this study will be helpful for screening of neonatal
jaundice from cord blood albumin in local population.
