This document summarizes the results of a survey conducted in November-December 2009 in Italy, France, Poland, Japan and the United States about public opinion on the upcoming Copenhagen conference on climate change. It finds that awareness of the conference varied between countries, with most expecting only a superficial agreement or no agreement from Copenhagen. Respondents' top fears related to global warming's environmental impacts. Most said political parties' stances on the environment are an important voting criterion and that individuals are willing to modify their lifestyles to help the environment.
A presentation given to the Conference of INGOs Committee for Democracy, Social Cohesion and Global Challenges on the updates of climate change following COP22 in Morocco and the potential roles NGOs might play, includes the example of the work of EUROGEO in the SeaChange Horizon 2020 Project.
COP 21: UN Climate Change Conference: Hearing the public's voiceIpsos UK
Between 30th November and 11th December 2015, 50,000 members from 195 countries will meet in Paris to discuss efforts on how to keep average global temperature rises below 2°C.
This is the 21st meeting of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21). The goal is to reach a consensus on a legally binding agreement that will enable member states to move into a more energy-efficient and greenhouse gas-reducing economy.
COP21 is seen by many as crucial to combat climate change; it is the first time in 20 years a legally binding agreement will be discussed.
What do the public feel about climate change and will they support an agreement at COP21? These slides present findings from research conducted by Ipsos MORI between 2005 to 2015.
BUILDING HOPE
Positive Psychology, a new branch of psychology focused on the empirical study of such things as positive emotions, strengths-based character, and healthy institutions. This emerging field offers guidance on how to feel more satisfied and engaged with life, regardless of one’s circumstances. Nineteen different scientifically-validated questionnaires on everything from love, compassion, grit and gratitude are building a robust body of data about what makes people happy and resilient.
What is hope? Hope is:
• a belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one's life
• A feeling that what you want is achievable and that events will turn out for the best.
Happiness, on the other hand, is a state of mind or feeling characterized by contentment, love, satisfaction, pleasure, or joy. Hope is about the future and happiness is about the present. You could say that people aspire to want hope and have happiness. To put it another way, hope is a means to having happiness.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
